A little OT but since we are talking about MLM/Pyramid Schemes I just found out that Trump's Education Secretary is the daughter of the founder of AMWAY.

I too, knew far too many people that fell for MLM scams in their late teens/early 90s selling knives, biogenix, amway, etc. Saw a family ripped apart because the young wife became enthralled by the cult and spent and borrowed a hundred thousand dollars to pay for AMWAY conferences and products which she tried to pressure sell to all her friends (both the products and conferences) and consequently lose them all.

The other flip side the Large Group Awareness Training (of which AMWAY conferences fall into) where they break you down emotionally and then build you back up with their methodologies. Sound familiar? That's brainwashing. I knew quite a few people in Calgary who have spent tens of thousands of dollars on PSI training.

After I supplied this "Friend" with the facts and some links and a general science lesson, he blocked me on Facebook so I can no longer effect his sales strategy.

He was a friend a few years back and now just acquaintance on FB. We always got along and had good debates. I just feel bad that he is getting suckered in to this garbage. Heck, I wasn't even rude about it and he blocks me.

Cut him off. Clearly you sent him information that shows that this is a scam, and he shut you out of his facebook page so he can keep selling that garbage. so I said earlier that a lot of these people are victims of a con too. But he's not, he knows better and doesn't care. I wouldn't associate with him at all, and I'd probably warn any friends that you share that he's selling bullspit in a bottle.

The bare minimum of consumer protection would be a rule requiring that MLMs disclose information essential to prospects’ making informed decisions about participation. Consumers should be warned against the inherent flaws in all endless chain recruitment programs, including MLM.

If you watch the John Oliver segment on MLMs, it`s probably a bad situation for your friend. I don`t know about this situation specifically, but;

It's very possible they make something like $1000 / unit. But had to spend something like $8,000 just to sign up, and have a quarterly sales/spending quota just to maintain status with the company. At this point they probably bought a few of the machines personally, because it was more cost effective to blow $4000 on a machine twice/year and earn $15,000/year than to get dumped by the company. and they now could be sitting on thousands in inventory, debt, and personally invested in this being the next thing.

All of that would make putting their head in the sand allot easier than listening to you.

not the same, but products like these "water sticks" to do the same thing. (wasn't the same brand as I linked, cannot remember the exact one) (the claims on this one are amazing)

I bought one of these ones before to test. I checked pH and ran an ICP-OES analysis of the water before and after using. The stick was successful raising the pH from 7 to slightly above 8, which is really a small amount, The ICP showed it actually lower the TDS of the water specifically the Ca and Mg as they scaled out on the stick as the pH raised.

I can't remember the exact results but it was funny it wasn't even close to what they claimed. I remember it also made claims of specific minerals in the stick to purify the water, but when I did an XRD and XRF analysis there was no evidence of the exotic minerals in detectable concentrations.

and Blah blah blah all the same #### other people said, one drop of HCl from the stomach acid and it is all moot.
