No, it was announced when they unveiled the retro WHA uniforms for the Heritage Classic. They said they'd be wearing them in a select number of game throughout the season and January 9 vs Calgary was one of them.

Yeah, exactly. And even if it was last minute the Jets would have to inform the Flames (and approval?) to bring their dark uniforms.

I don't see WPG just deciding yesterday they wanted to wear their Heritage Classic uniforms. The uniform sched is usually released before the season starts so they had every opportunity to pull this off.

This is from an article dated October 24th:
Quote:
If you really loved those special jerseys worn by the Winnipeg Jets during Sunday's NHL Heritage Classic, you'll get a chance to see them again — and then again.
The team is planning to wear the retro-esque jerseys against the Calgary Flames on Jan. 9 and then against the Minnesota Wild on March 19. Both games will be at the MTS Centre.

Obviously the Flames had enough warning to bring their dark jerseys. They could have easily brought the retros. A Dumb decision with a capital D.
Who is in charge of stuff like that?

@RogMillions
Just guessing perhaps out of respect for the #Jets Heritage Uniforms #Flames elected to let them bask in History. Would be nice gesture.
Guess the Flames didn't want to look better infront of the Peg fans
Interesting though, is Calgary the only team to not wear their Heritage Classic/WC uniform post event? I don't recall them ever wearing them again.

Isn't there some sort of NHL quota or limitation on how many times teams can wear their 3rd jersey's in a season? If so, I'm happy they didn't waste one of those opportunities on a road game, on a Monday night, that starts at 6pm and likely won't be the most viewed game this season.

Was excited at first but..
Primaries? Lame. I mean cool kind of but if the Jets are donning their winter classics then the flames should wear something "classic" too.

I'm pretty sure the Flames normally bring a backup set of (away white) jerseys on the road, i.e. in case one gets damaged during the game. They probably only have one set of retro jerseys though, whereas they would have two sets of home reds?

Home games have 15-17k buts in seats these days, while hundreds of thousands watch them on TV, not to mention the fans from the Dome are watching away games on TV. We're in a playoff race, fans are watching games on Monday, Wednesday Saturday, whatever day. 6pm start time? Who isn't watching a 6pm start time that is watching a 7pm start time?
All of those things weren't really dismissive of missing an opportunity for a really cool classic look to a game.

It's great the Jets are wearing their retros. It's a symbol of terrible past teams and utter futility. Go Flames!

These are based on their WHA uniforms and they were actually a good team when they wore them (won 3 of the final 4 WHA championships).

Point on the home game is don't waste the opportunity to not show them off on paying fans.
I don't disagree with what you are saying in general, however, I guarantee a Monday night game starting at 6pm reduces the local ratings. Based on your thoughts about 6pm, I take you don't have many commitments at work or after. Most people I know struggle to make it home by 6pm during the week from work (thus they aren't watching the start of the game), and that doesn't factor in any other things they have to do, such as picking up kids from sports or other extra curricular. If 6pm was as good as 7pm, local start time for events and Flames home games would be 6pm. Earlier start impacts the Flames viewing audience for sure.

Their 90's jerseys looked a lot cooler, imo.

Those retros represent the WHA era when they tore teams a new one on a regular basis (including the Oilers which I'm tremendously thankful for).
