Just to answer the question. looks like Scheifele was given a penalty on the play. McCabe did not. which i think is the correct call. It was a clean hit.

5:51WinnipegWPGMark Scheifele (Roughing - 2 min) drawn by Jake McCabe

Great, clean hit. Love the response by the Jets.

Have to laugh at the people overreacting at the Jets reaction to the hit. If Johnny was laid out people would be screaming bloody murder if his teammates didn't come to his defense. Actually, when Johnny was slashed the cries for retribution were in full force.

You want to lay out our best player? Better be prepared for retaliation. That's the way the game has been for a long time.

I agree with you... I bet though that if Johnny was hit like that, sadly, none of the Flames would respond like that.

Wow. Did Lowry flip the puck over the glass so Berube could get out of the penalty box?

Monahan was supposed to be as good or better than Scheifele. Sadly, he has never protected his teammates this way. It's night and day

Clean hit, some contact between helmets it seems. Still surprised to see Laine so shook from it though, can't see him missing any significant time as a result.

New nickname...Patrick "Porce" Laine...cause porcelain is fragile....I'll see myself out.

He looked like a deer when the trainer was helping him up..and not the Dougie Hamilton kind. I think he'll be out a little while.

Nobody remembers Iginla being hit cleanly and the entire team, including Iginla chasing the offender down directly after the hit and for the rest of the game? This was at least 15 years ago.

Fighting after a clean hit has been a thing for decades.

Never said it didn't happen in the past, just that it runs at 100% now, and there are fewer open ice hits overall.

Sure players went after other players who made clean hits in 2007 too. Just not every hit.

Phaneuf didn't have to fight anyone after he hit Hamel.

Edit: and again, I don't mean players didn't fight after an open ice hit 10 years ago. It happened often. It's just today 100% of open ice hits require you to fight.
100%? Maybe, but if it's not it should be. It's a fitting reaction.

I don't see how the era of open ice hitting is dead because a scrum happens after them. If it's dead, it's because of the speed, awareness, and education of players now, not because more scrums happen. Players are faster and more agile than ever before, and they know the real damage they can do (and the possible suspensions they can incur). Scrums after have been happening for a lot more than a few years.

If McCabe wasn't deterred enough prior to that hit, a little shot from Schief isn't going to scare him off.

Yeah it blows my mind people cry about this. Clean check, yes. Good chance to injure player anyways, yes. Other players sticking up for the best player on their team after he gets laid out is exactly what I love to see. It's a competitive sport and intimidating your opponent is a facet of the game. You wanna make open ice checks on our guys, go ahead. But your gunna pay. Good on Scheiffle.

Yes it was a clean hit, but I love that Scheiffele didn't think twice about jumping McCabe. You want your opponent to be too scared to even look at your best player the wrong way.

Schieffle is a bitch. I'm 100% up for him defending his team mate, I mean he sent the suicide pass after all. However... Don't go in and sucker the guy. Be a ####ing man and go toe to toe. Only bitches like Bieska throw sucker punches.

Now if it was a dirty hit that reaction wouldn't be as bad. A clean hit like that tho, be a man and go toe to toe.

If it's not okay to jump people on the street, why is it okay in hockey ? That stuff is for bitches who can't fight and want an unfair advantage. Men go toe to toe.

So how, in his skates travelling at speed with an entire game of hockey going around you, would you have gauged the minute visual difference between a dirty hit and a clean one?
