With how hard it is to find a regular rental right now, that seems like a decent idea to me. As long as you have the room to park 'em all

Bump

Looking to rent a Turo in San Diego in February.
Just looking at a minivan so could go rental car too.

Is Turo better? Cheaper?
Any considerations I'm not thinking of?

Like with anything else, it depends. You will be renting a vehicle from an individual owner, not a company. Turo is just a platform. You may get a good, clean vehicle and have a great experience. You may get a not so good one - smelling bad or not running well. The biggest unknown is unforeseen circumstances during rental - accidents, breakdowns, theft etc. Check your own auto insurance for coverage of those if renting through Turo. Check with Turo during booking if you can buy their insurance for this booking; it is likely worth it to avoid a huge hassle. If it breaks down on a highway, you are screwed - this is not Avis or Hertz, they will not bring you replacement within 2 hours.

Then insurance, maintenance, basic cleaning (I’m assuming there are fees for excessive mess). But yeah seems doable after a year or 2. However how often would you want to be responsible for drop off and pick up of said vehicle? That sounds like a big hassle as the owner.

I rented one in New York.

It worked on cheaper for my 1 day need. I talked with my insurance company (dejardan) and they said it would be covered like any rental under my policy. (Do your own diligence here). It was also a much better pick off and drop off location and hours. Picked up keys from a mail box a few blocks from my hotel at 5 in the morning and dropped them off at midnight.

It was a beat up 10 year old car but I knew that looking in. The pick up drop off flexibility was worth it to me.

That post was several years ago and in response to someone with dumping a rental fleet on Turo. Hassle, sure. But if it's basically a full time job/side hustle where you're renting it out for basically the purchase price on a 10 year old vehicle, if not more... I'm sure there's a bunch of people really happy to do it.

I think the recent posts are a good way to think of it. For a single day or two of a rental, Turo is probably OK. But if it's longer for a pretty serious trip, just keep in mind that an easy contingency may not be available.

Exactly, you need to price in your own hourly rate for dealing with it all. I'd be curious to see a detailed analysis on this by someone renting a vehicle full time.
