This made me curious, so I looked up some numbers...

Oddly, this is one area where Gretzky isn't the run-away winner. He only had 91 GWG in his career, which is tied with Mark Recchi for 17th overall.

Jaromir Jagr has more GWG than any other player in NHL history, with 133. Second all-time is Phil Esposito with 118.

Despite having more GWG than anyone else, Jagr has not scored a GWG against every team. He has not scored a GWG against Columbus, Detroit, San Jose, or St Louis.

He has also not scored a GWG against the Coyotes or Avalanche, but he does have GWGs against the original Jets and Nordiques. He has GWGs against both the Whalers and Hurricanes as well as both the Thrashers and the new Jets. He never scored a GWG against the Minnesota North Stars, but he has 2 against the Dallas Stars.

Iginla is second on the active list and 6th all-time, with 97 (tied with Guy Lafleur). There are three teams he has never scored a GWG against: Calgary, Toronto, and Pittsburgh. He also has GWGs against the Thrashers and Whalers. In fact, his first ever GWG was against Hartford.

Marleau is 9th all-time and the only player in the top 10 with fewer than 500 total goals. Of the 19 players who have scored at least 90 GWG in their careers, only Marleau and Fedorov have fewer than 500 total career goals.

Marleau does have at least one GWG against every NHL franchise other than the Sharks, but he does not have one against the Winnipeg Jets. His one GWG against that franchise was against the Thrashers.

Ovechkin is already 11th on the all-time GWG list despite only having played 874 games. Ovechkin is the only player in NHL history with at least 90 GWG who has fewer than 1000 games played. Ovechkin has scored the GWG in 10.64% of all games he has played. At his current pace, he should score his 100th GWG before he plays his 1000th NHL game.

There are four teams other than the Capitals that Ovechkin hasn't scored a GWG against: Arizona, Dallas, LA, and Nashville. He does have a combined 9 GWG against the Thrashers/Jets franchise.

I wonder where Gretzky would sit in terms of game winning goals plus assists on game winning goals. That might be a more telling stat for him.
