Sadly this team still doesn't look like it should be anything but a seller. If you could pick up someone with another year on their contract after this, I would be for it.
As stated by a few, this team is short a top 4 defenseman. Some nice prospects in Stockton, but not close to that level yet.
If Elliott could pick up his play, he would be a nice insurance policy for a contender.

The Flames should sell even if they're in a playoff spot. There will be teams looking to get "something" from their unprotected assets, but won't want to part with them until after the playoffs, hence the Flames need to gather some currency (ie picks and prospects) to make a homerun trade for an exposed asset. Go after nobody unless its dirt cheap, which it won't be because I can't see alot of sellers

Not interested in giving up any of our futures for a rental player. The asking price tends to be on the stupid side so I would hope Tree passes.

We are still rebuilding here... no acquisitions where the upside is not clearly in our favour for the long term future.

It feels like this teams success is based on extremely good goaltending. Unfortunately that level of goaltending seems unsustainable with this tandem, which I think leaves the flames as a team on the outside of the playoff picture.
Think flames will end up being sellers. Moving guys like Engelland, Stajan, Wideman, bouma, elliott, etc. I would be intrigued to see if they go big game hunting and trying to get next year's starting goalie by throwing some bigger chips in.

I'll take this opportunity to do this for the very first time, seeing as how you are also making a joke...

If the Flames are still in contention at the deadline, I hope they prudently consider all options, and make trades which provide the best value for the team.
Whether that be as "buyers", or as "sellers", or both.
If someone offers a 2nd for Wideman, I hope they take it. If you can snake Iginla or Jagr for a throw-away draft pick, you do that too.
The Flames are in a position where they can take or leave any deal that comes across. They're not being forced to make any kind of move.
I hope they win trades. That's all.

IF we are in contention we are not going to go deep even with a rental or two. We should be offering our rentals Elliot Wideman etc. Donot want to give up picks unless we have real shot at going to Conference finals.

There is no way you trade Brodie. If you don't understand why he is underperforming this year look up the story with his fiancée. Trading him would be one of the biggest mistakes this franchise ever made.

Giving up Brodie to get Kadri isn't cheap add though

It's going to be a buyers market IMO seeing as the east has zero ambiguity over who will make the playoffs. I don't think it would hurt to buy of the player has years attached, but a pure rental doesn't make sense at this time .
As far as selling, we should put Bouma and Wideman out there but I suspect neither will have value.

I hate these obsessions with a top 6 winger that shoots RH. How bout just getting a top 6 guy that is good regardless what side he shoots. If he could play RW, that's more ideal.

Normally I would agree, NHL players should be able to play each side with relative proficiency. But the Flames (maybe the league, I dunno) have a severe lack of right shots, particularly in the top-end category.
At the very least, it opens up shooting holes that don't exist right now. You can't have a full team of left-handers. It's actually kind of weird how many lefties are on the team.

No sellers??
The Eastern Conference is already decided before the halfway mark...plenty of sellers there...and easily a few in the west, too.

I'd say a #4 D, or basically just a competent defensive d-man is the greatest need.

But if you get a rental your giving up too much when we arent ready to contend and if you get a long term fix you have to expose one of the top 4... I can't see us being buyers.

If we are buyers, we are buying a forward. And it's because that forward has term or team control beyond this season. The Flames defensive protection is a lock, and the Flames forward protection still has questions. Because of term, I could see either or both of Frolik and Brouwer being exposed. I also see the Flames agreeing to an extension with Engelland but not signing it until after the draft.
Expansion, like the dark side, clouds everything. Hard to see the future is.
