Yeah I did Electrical Engineering..
And yeah, I never remember details, I can't memorize worth crap but I never need to.
That's why I hate interviews with technical questions
My point was that schools nowadays don't each those skills hulk was talking about; skills like thinking and learning. They focus instead on helping them get the grade they need to move on and eventually get out of school with no analytical skills, no ability to research, and no ability to think outside the predefined box that was setup for them.
Ok maybe it's not all that bad, but talking to the young people I know I can't say I'm very impressed with today's education system.
|
Well then schools must have changed some time in the last few years, becasue I would very much disagree with that. And I haven't exactly been out of school for a very long time.

Hey guys, I am writing an editorial for the school newspaper and would like your thoughts or tips to all you english experts or editors. I just finished it and still have some work to do but I'm going to post it right here. Any feedback is appreciated, thanks!
Are you ready to forgive the NHL?
Last time we saw the NHL’s finest was more then a full hockey season ago. After the Armageddon that we called the National Hockey League lockout, the NHL and the NHLPA came to a new Collective bargaining agreement that will last over six seasons.
An equal playing field has been set in place, but the question still remains. Will the fans come running back into the NHL’s open arms? Sure there is a salary cap set at 39 million dollars, but really how does that help the smaller markets? Even the small teams have payrolls hovering around 28-30 million dollar ranges. They can not keep control over how much the owners are willing to splurge for the clubs salary etc. The smaller teams have low payrolls and low revenue and they are just trying to make a profit from the season. But it is tough for some teams with low payrolls to break even. The spendaholics like the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings will still be able to buy players just like before, but on cheaper contracts.
All the new rule changes will allow the younger freewheeling players more room to operate and can get rid of the lugs that fill up roster spots just to fight. Sure they will still be there in enforcers but in much reduced roles.
The new rules have the two-line pass eliminated, and the offensive zoned growing by four feet at each end. Another new rule that will have a huge impact on the game will be the limited area behind the net that the goaltenders can handle the puck. Goaltenders such as Marty Brodeur and Marty Turco, who are puck-handling wizards, will now be very limited in the areas that they can play the puck.
Hopefully the referees will now crackdown heavily. They have been threatening to crack down on obstruction for years now, and this is a real chance to pull it off.
Something that the NHL has done that they think will attract more fans is adding the shootout, which will eliminate all tie games during the regular season. After a five minute overtime in which the teams are still tied, all games will head right to a shootout. Each team will select three players to take shots. After 6 shots, the team with the most goals will be the winner. If the score is still tied after six shots, the shootout heads to a sudden death format.
This leaves me very skeptical about whether the NHL will be able to bring the fans back with a few rule changes. Darryl Sutter has put together a team that he believes will prosper in the new NHL world. It’s too close to say yet, but in Sutter we trust.
EDIT: I am 15 and in grade 10...in case I didnt make that clear.

PG - overall it is good work. My main piece of advice would be to think about the focus of the piece. What is the main thing you want to discuss?
At the beginning it poses an interesting question that could form the basis of the piece - are the fans ready to forgive the NHL? From here it provides a summary of the new CBA (good), and an overview of the rules...also good but perhaps too detailed as it detracts from the focus of the piece.
At the end of you have "Darryl Sutter has put together a team that he believes will prosper in the new NHL world. It’s too close to say yet, but in Sutter we trust." To me this seems out of place...I'm not sure what it has to do with the original question posed.
One idea would be to get interview some of your peers and get their quotes on whether or not they plan on supporting the NHL or if they are still bitter about the lockout.
Again - very good stuff but I think as the piece moves along it starts to stray away from the central topic.
Hope that helps.

Thanks Jiri. Yes, the Darryl Sutter comment was a bit out of place but I was very confused on a good solid ending. The main thing I want to discuss is if the fans will come flying back to the NHL just like before, or if some fans will be bitter over a lost year of hockey.
What do you mean by too detailed? Meaning I went pretty deep into the salary cap issue, rules, etc?
I am not sure about the interviewing the peers idea but I could give that a shot tomorrow. Thanks Jiri

Mr. Berry, he's easily the best teacher.

I never had any of his classes but I did hear good things.
My teachers are:
Visser, Townsend, Berry, and Williams.
Next semester: Dolan (when I met Heatley, Dany asked about Dolan when I mentioned I'm at Scarlett right now), Deis, and Williams again.

I don't know what kind of space you have, but that seems like a fairly long editorial. Do you have a predetermined number of words or space you have to fill?
Cutting some of the details would probably be your best bet if you are taking up too much space. You'd rather do it yourself I'm sure than let someone else do it so take that into account.
I'd hate to contradict the esteemed JiriHrdina, but if it's a true editorial you don't want to have quotes from your fellow students and whatnot. It's supposed to be your opinion after all.
Anyhow, good job.

I'd say you went into too much detail regarding the rules. A quick overview of what they've added/ changed in an effort to make the game better for fans is probably sufficient. No need to explain it all. I thought your exploration of the cap though was good - the right amount of detail.
Rouge is right too - comments from peers would not make it a true editorial. Never mind that idea.
As for an ending - always a tough call. Perhaps just revisit the opening question and answer yourself whether or not you're ready to forgive the NHL.
Good luck

Dude, you misunderstand what I posted, and I may have misunderstood what YOU posted.
Math IS crutial, regardless of what you do. 50 points on the buck ain't goin' to cut it. Period.
As for you getting a diploma of technology, cool, but you saying you didn't need hardcore math (ie a 50 point grade in Math 11) to get there would worry me IF I were your perspective employer. Let alone this mentality....
Nothing is funny in the real world about shinguard like that. Want to put THAT on your resume? I didn't think so either.
Again, this is NOT jumping on you. Consider this an out of the blue internet wake up call as to what a perspective employer would think of your attitude in this matter. Let alone the personal aspects for finances, etc.
|
I consistently failed/got D's in math from grade 7 through 12. Had tutors and everything, still blew monkeys when it came to math. Point? I graduated University AND College and have a very technical, well-paying job. Math is not the be-all and end-all.

Shawnski- I think you are taking a high school mark way to seriously.
I graduated last year and have found that as long as you don't completely blow high school, it doesn't really matter. Heres what I took in grade 12:
I took Bio 30, Econ 30 and Math 30 in grade 11 and Spanish 30 in grade 10 (I forget every word).
Semester 1:
Math 31
Chem 30
Physics 30
Chem 35 AP
Semester 2:
English 30
Social 30
Physics 35 AP
Semester 2 was the best few months of school for me. Barely any work and alot of fun on weekends.

i could have taken all 10 ap but i decided that it would be to much of a commitment, and too much work would result with playing hokcey and school football this year. math 10 pure, science 10, social 10, religion 15, fiancial management, mechanics
10-1 and 10-2 and gym is pretty cool now. Things like wall climbing and archery. I was suprised though that i was getting 48 credits. of the needed 100 in my first year of highschool. GO Ghosts.
