The islanders have one of the best players in the entire league and can't even build a consistent playoff threat. I hope Connor McDavid is paying close attention to Tavares' situation because this is his life now

I'm okay with that price tag on a 2 year term.
But man, for a 5 year term, he should be looking at about about half that cap hit.
Woof.
I'm a big Clutterbuck fan, but that contract is Garth Snow levels of bad.

I will always remember Clutterbuck as the first opposing player I got to swear at me after the Flames came to the Quad Cities.
On topic, I agree with everyone else this seems like a lot.

that's why some teams will never be successful in a cap world. You don't overpay bottom liners, especially not long-term.

Pretty much everyone does it, at least the consistent non playoff teams anyway.
Even the Flames are/were investing north of $6M per year into Stajan, Bouma and Bollig. These are three 4th line guys that may not even get another NHL contract.
