Gabriel got dropped with a punch to the face and he didn't have to go through the concussion protocol.
Pretty inconsistent application of the policy IMO.

Chin smacking on the ice is way more likely to cause a concussion. The ice doesn't give, your jaw is involved.
But moreover the fact they may have messed up in not applying the policy to Gabriel doesn't mean McDavid should be ignored.

Do you think they should have followed protocol with McDavid then?

TSN just posted an article (might have been a video or radio clip, didn't click it) titled "Dreger: Why the concussion spotter overreacted to McDavid".
Yeah Dregs, let's ignore a teenagers health and well-being because your self-esteem is so low that you can't handle going a few shifts without McDavid. It's not like science has proven concussions lead to serious health issues or anything, right? Nope, better make sure he plays those three shifts. That's the important thing here.
Seriously, #### Connor McDavid and #### tools like Dreger who fawn over him as if he's some sort of God. I don't think Crosby would even get this much attention over missing 6 minutes. That's maybe 3 shifts.
I don't care how good he is, the media alone has made me loathe him. The fact that he's an Oiler doesn't help but I don't hate anyone in their team as much as McDavid, and I blame TSN. That network has become an absolute joke filled with a bunch of talentless hacks who have some sort of weird crush on McDavid. It's creepy, annoying, and reeks of desperation. It's okay to go a day without mentioning his name. Even in articles about their game the always throw in a "McDavid and the Oilers", or they post a picture of McDavid. There's 22 other guys on that team.
Sorry for the rant and going on a bit of a tangent, I just really hate TSN (Dreger specifically), the Oilers, and Connor McDavid. Even hearing his name annoys me. "Connor McDavid". Barf.

I actually think TSN has a lot of talent. Their Sportsdesk crew is vastly superior to RSN's cast. I simply think Dreger really doesn't offer much as a hockey insider anymore now that Nonis isn't in a management capacity in the NHL. With McKenzie entrenched as their main insider I'm not sure what purpose Dreger serves there outside of offering his unwanted opinion.

Incidentally, the only reason McDavid is not merely the second greatest athlete in human history is because the Toronto media can't figure out who it actually wants to salivate over more: Matthews or Marner.

I'm ok with it.
I just think if they are going to use their protocol they should be doing the same for all hits to the head.

I don't know why you have to limit him like that. Greatest of all sport and time is sufficient.
I just find it funny that there's so much anger on the board about how much attention he gets, and then he misses a couple shifts and there's a thread on here. Maybe people just can't help but talk about him.

Totally agree with Dreger... it should be him deciding who needs the protocol, not some stupid doctor who might not even know who the stars of the game are.

Patrick Maroon's reactions got some attention:
http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2016/12/...rs-nhl-twitter
“This is a man’s game,” the St. Louis Mo. native said. “People are going to get hit, get high-sticked. They’re going to go through the middle and get hit. That’s part of hockey, and that’s why we have all this gear that protects us.
“Yes, if someone gets seriously hurt, we’re concerned. But he just fell, got tripped… I just don’t get it.”
He repeated: “It’s a man’s game.”
And since-deleted:

Yeah I don't see anything wrong with what he said. He clearly didn't mean to be sexist in any way. The NHL is a man's game.

If anything it's ageist. Man versus boys can't be said anymore?
But yeah...of course some people get upset about the stupidest thing and dramatise to satisfy their fragile egos (talking about whoever was offended by his comment)

The NHL is a men's "League".
Hockey is everyone's game. Men, Women, old-farts, Children and Air-Force.
You don't need a degree to know that, Patrick..

You either take concussions seriously or not. You can't hide behind bravado, and then when you're out of the game, blame (and/or sue) the league for not doing enough.
What a maroon.

I think you missed the point.
He doesn't "get" why there is concussion protocols in place. I read it as he is concerned about the "pussification" of the game.
Table 5 is correct, concussions need to be taken seriously. Anyone associated with the team (any team) isn't in a position to make an unbiased decision on a player's ability to return to the game.

No, I didn't miss the point. There was backlash for him supposedly being sexist with his comments which is what I was commenting on. Couldn't care less about what he thinks of the concussion protocols.
