Why are people so afraid of cars with accidents from a consumer standpoint. As long as the frame wasn't damaged why is this a thing?

Because the repair is only as good as the shop that did it, and the parts used. There are a ton of great body shops out there, there are equally as many horrible hack body shops using jobber non OEM parts, poor quality paints, have poorly skilled bodymen. Body work and painting is almost an art. Top quality guys are like artists... or top shelf plastic surgeons. No 2 repairs are the same.

Also there can be electrical gremlins pop up from improperly wired cars. If there was an airbag deployment, was a new one put in, or a used one out of another write-off? Was all the factory rust proofing and galvanizing properly re-done?

On a 10 year old $8500 Accord or Camry someone is gonna drive into the ground and use as a transportation appliance, they may not care. On a 2 year old $45,000 Grand Cherokee.... yeah, it's a big deal.

Pylon, do dealers typically have access to the damage details and repair history? I've looked at a couple of CPO cars with some accident history, but they never seem to have the details of the damage (and Carproof is only very general). Are they not allowed to keep records of prior history for privacy reasons? Or are they just not being transparent?

Because with a repaired car like that, a huge amount of the profit margin comes from cutting corners. We've all heard the horror stories.

I wouldn't touch something with a repaired frame with a 40 foot pole though. They mostly do good work but in an accident the previous metallurgical stresses can yield some weird results.
