I would suggest one of two things:

* team Canada hockey jersey, hoodie, shirt, hat etc
* Hudson's bay blanket

My mom always gives moccasins. I think it's because she always wears them instead of slippers.

Just make sure they are made in Canada. I always bring back gifts to family and friends in Asia and I've learned they will appreciate the gift more if the item is made in Canada instead of in their backyard (say, China or Vietnam). This is why maple syrup always make a good gift. Another popular gift whenever I go to Asia is OMGs candy (Clodhoppers used to be popular gifts but they are widely available now).

I picked up one of these for a couple that are coming here in Dec.

It only cost $10, and we all know how much you spent on gifts equates to how much you like them, and now that I think about it, they're from Israel so it's probably a terrible gift.

Awe ####. Want to buy an ornament for $60 to give your friend?

I had to go through the Canadiana gift exercise for someone in Japan. Ended up buying the following:

Really nice quality gift book of photos of Canadian Rockies. There is a number of them available on amazon.ca within $50;
Heavy cotton knitted scarf from The Bay's special "Bay-merchandise" section - $80 +/-;
Souvenir bottle of maple syrup (everyone got that one, obviously);
Box-set of The Guess Who CD's (https://www.amazon.ca/Ultimate-Colle.../dp/B000002X1B) for $70.
Calgary Flames jersey - no-name, but authentic - $90.

I've spent more than $100, obviously, but individually, each item was under $100.

You literally just described every Tilley hat owner. Are you sure he wouldn't give it a try? I think there is a reason they are so popular with that exact demographic (I couldn't tell you the reason though)

If you're still stuck, in jest, you can always consider buying this as a place holder:

Spoiler!

I'd say it is a very Canadian response.
