I heard an interview with him a while back and he said that song was KD Lang's now after hearing her sing it.
Just shows what generous talent he was.
Jeff Buckley's was my favorite. Sure, it's over exposed now, but hearing him sing that at whatever festival that was we were all watching on Much Music at the time was very powerful and probably was what brought the song into the mainstream.
I loved Russian Red's cover of So Long Marianne. That was the thing with Cohen, I found him more or less unlistenable, but his stuff was amazing when covered.

There have been some amazing Cohen covers. But the young Cohen singing that song, in particular, was a very raw, moving and beautiful song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XzAjfwQtvM
I remember this poem from high school, it still my favourite of anything I had read.
Quote:
what i'm doing here - leonard cohen
I do not know if the world has lied
I have lied
I do not know if the world has conspired against love
I have conspired against love
The atmosphere of torture is no comfort
I have tortured
Even without the mushroom cloud
still I would have hated
Listen
I would have done the same things
even if there were no death
I will not be held like a drunkard
under the cold tap of facts
I refuse the universal alibi
Like an empty telephone booth passed at night
and remembered
like mirrors in a movie palace lobby consulted
only on the way out
like a nymphomaniac who binds a thousand
into strange brotherhood
I wait
for each one of you to confess

I don't know that this fits with sad 2016. I'm sure he was at peace with his life and was very happy he passed with such dignity. His is a life to celebrate and not mourn. I have no doubt that is what he would have wanted.
We were so fortunate to see him on tour a few years ago - the man put on a hell of a show. But that voice and his words... Wow. There will never be another like him. RIP

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

This one has just been legendarily awful. Bowie, Shandling, Cohen, Rickman... there are so many more. Not to mention Trump.
Is it really any different than any other year? Really? Here are some notable deaths:
30 - Jesus
2011 - Elizabeth Taylor, Amy Winehouse, Jack Layton, Lokomotiv hockey team
2012 - Dick Clark, Neil Armstrong, Rodney King, Larry Hagman
2013 - Nelson Mandella, James Gandolfini, James Avery, Paul Walker
2014 - Robin Williams, Tony Gwynn, Shirley Temple,
2015 - Leonard Nimoy, B.B. King, Percy Sledge, Yogi Berra
2017 - Gord Downie

This was a shock. Leonard Cohen also was a very great poet. His music brought him fame and notoriety but if anyone gets a chance to pickup any of his poetry it will challenge and excite you.
He is Canadian fabric, very much like Mordecai Richler. (believe they were friends). MANY MANY artists have covered his works. Most notably KD Lang really transformed the darkness of his songs into beauty juxtaposed by the darkness and harshness of the lyrics. Even if you did not appreciate his music, you could not deny the power of his lyrics.
Bird on a wire
The tower of song
Sad for this loss. Will be listening to his music for the next couple days.

I am not not a good judge of poetry, but a friend of mine wrote this last night/this morning. If you want to know the author's name PM me. He is a actually a top-end photographer.
The Orchestra pit of the soul
(For Leonard Cohen)
Loss is a gift to us- we learn to cherish and dance- to cry and take bigger chances.
The orchestra pit of the soul expands through the darkness
The dead all pick up their instruments and perform the dirge
for the poet
Strings break
They play on
For
The one who sewed the patch to the hole of the the world with a hallelujah
Song.
They all cover the tune
Balloons uprising with the trumpeting angels in the streets of Montreal.
Guiding with tarnished trumpets
Finger prints on the exterior
While every mark of poetry
Is within the inferior.
Leonard chose music over poetry
As the audience commanded the encores
To repeat over and over
And for the three part harmony singers to
Make it complete.
We gather today to celebrate a long life
Of Eluded death
Journeys beyond the flesh
A Mesh of nations
Not dreading or focussing on dread
Because it is all
Transition points
To deeper views
Sunsets and sorrow remembered
Holding hands and
Letting go of hardened hands.
Servitude
To the solace of a world lighting candles
Crying while taking the plunge into a healing bath
Lion legs weakened
Resting and grieving
Taking dusty books off shelves
That were once read to bring
A lover to the bed
The honest notion
That poetry is the song
That helped you belong.
Have you been sanctified
Cleansed
Or immortalized
While the ashes reflect light of the flame on the water.
Was it the dame or the damned
The broken down drunk
The sunken eyes of the old woman eating soup
The identity thief
Leaving clues for gender
Identity.
Was it Marianne
That you visited bedside
To say goodbye
Properly.
Was it the property of the world expanding beyond the word?
How can you mourn a poet
A sage
A song
A longing
A dance
A blue raincoat
In a downpour or tears.
I am a better man
Because of one poem written
By you
In high school
No longer a fool
In the court of
Mortals.
I hope this tribute
The seraphs and demons
Won't refuse.
