to summarize Calgary 2008 draft was as follows:

Neimsz, Wahl, Bouma, Larson, Brodie, Grantham and Deilbert - so the flames got meaningful mileage out of 2 out of 7 guys (~30%). if the scouting staff were really that smart then why were they so wrong about neimsz?

can't celebrate the wins without ignoring the misses

as I recall datsuyk (sp?) was an 8th round pick - if the detriots scouts were smart then would he not have been a much higher pick?

to me the draft is a crapshoot, but if you are really smart and talented at evaluating players, you can increase your odds somewhat.

Maximizing your draft is about taking players that you're confident in as late as possible. If the scouts were comfortable that Brodie would most likely be on the board in the 4th round then why use an earlier pick? Use the earlier pick on a guy who you like and know won't be around later.

Very few drafted players turn into NHL'ers let alone impact NHL'ers. You can look at any team's draft history and pick it apart with hindsight.

Seeing Doughty in person Saturday night really increased my appreciation for how good he is. He's fantastic player. I'd have him #1 overall.

Doughty has two Stanley Cup rings to prove his worth at number 1 on the list.

Doughty is amazing, no doubt. One of the best.

He deserves credit for getting two Cups, but Cups are a team effort and the Kings had a great team.

You can be an amazing player and still not win Cups. Stamkos is a really special talent.

My list is still

  1. Stamkos
  2. Doughty
  3. Holtby

Exactly.

Any Flames' fan over the last few seasons who follow the draft should have realized by now that teams try and see which other teams are looking at certain prospects the Flames are interested in. The whole 'Gaudreau and Kucherov being on a different list' type of thing.

Also, FWIW (and IIRC), it was Webster that scouted Brodie and pushed for him, and the Flames did select him when they felt they couldn't wait any longer or risk losing him. Webster was very confident Brodie had a very good chance of turning into an NHL'er.

As for the list, only reason Myers should be ahead of Brodie is probably because he is still living off the 'Rookie of the year" hype.

Karlsson and Doughty likely end up being considered alltime greats at their position when all is said and done, not sure Stamkos will.

Okay come on now.... he's 26 and has 320 goals. If he averages 20 a year for the next decade (which he will surpass) he's easily into the 500 mark. All three are great players.
