Let's see how this plays out

Treliving - "Matthew, we appreciate the effort, you came into the camp with a purpose, you impressed us but unfortunately for you, it was all for not. We are not a contender this year, so regardless if you deserve it we are sending you back to junior, we need to save $$ against the cap in future years. It is all about dollars not achievement, hopefully you understand. BTW please don't tell the other prospects about this, it would kind make us seem like hypocrites you know the whole 'only earned nothing given' thing. Let's just keep this on the down low...."

When Matthew Tkachuk saw the clip pop up, he was a bit nervous.

"We were doing video here in the morning and Gully showed a bad clip of me ... He said that it just takes one mistake to be out of this league," Tkachuk recounted. "But then he showed a couple good ones and said, 'You've done enough good things to stay.'

"All the guys congratulated me after and kind of made me sweat it out a little, that's for sure. It felt really good."
Quote:
After this morning's video session and meeting wrapped up, the team shared what they wanted to see Tkachuk do moving forward.

"Don't change a thing," was how Tkachuk summed up the coaches' message to him. "Play in their face. I've done some good things since I've been here so I've just got to keep it up."

I agree with this move. Obviously he's not fully developed yet but he hasn't looked out of place.

I think Tkachuk is better at being an annoyance than Sam Bennett. Tkachuk seems to be able to play on the edge without taking dumb penalties.

The difference between Bennett and Tkachuk is that Bennett doesn't go out onto the ice thinking "How can I piss off the other team right now?". He's just so tenacious on the puck and such a battler that other players hate playing against him.

Bennett will crash and bang all day because he wants to win. Tkachuk is just a dick.

I"m happy with this - love his game, even with the odd mistake. His dad will be proud - and eventually so will we be as he matures and continues to crush opponents in the hard places.

I approve of this move. As others have mentioned, Tkachuk adds a snarly element needed in the young core. More than just a pest.

Glad he's staying up. He's earned it and bit by bit he's getting better. I'm not to concerned with his point totals. Unlike other guys on the team, he's the kind of guy who can contribute even if he's on a long scoring drought. I love how he gets under the oppositions skin and he's really the only person who is doing that right now. Something we have desperately needed since Phaneuf left. It will be interesting to see him against Brent Burns tonight.

He's going to be a beast in his prime.

Arguably, this will translate to lower cost for a longer time down the road.

For example, let's say that we expect him to score: 35, 45, 60, and 70 points over the next four seasons in the NHL (and that expectation is the same whether he plays this season in Calgary or London).

In that example, if he plays this season in Calgary, he'll be up for a contract renewal in three years. At that time, he'll have 140 points in three NHL seasons. If he plays this season in London, his contract will slide for a year and he'll be up for a renewal in four years. At that time, he'd have 175 points in three NHL seasons.

How much would that extra 35 points be worth on a long-term contract? A million per year? More? Less? Whatever it is, it's probably not nothing.

So, by that logic, sending him down to let his ELC slide would save the Flames money in 2019-20 (which is either the first year of his second contract if he stays, or the final year of his ELC if he's sent down), but keeping him up potentially saves them more money for every season of his second contract after 2019-20.

This is a great move by the team. He is a great player who is going to be out there doing great things every night. I'll tell you how his is going to be great! By using his great hockey playing skills he is going to be a great asset and only increase his greatness. By being great his is going to show just how great he is. Gonna be yuuuuuuuuuuuge.

The 40 game mark is more important in this case and it makes sense. I would hope that depending on Tkachuk's performance in the next 5 weeks, that there is still an option of lending him for the WJC.
