Yes, because he'd played all of three professional games before this season and has a very good Stockton defense ahead of him. I'm convinced Kanzig will be an excellent Engelland replacement in a couple years. For the interim, free agency options exist.

Those are real high hopes and expectations for him. He can barely skate, honestly I don't expect him to be even close to as good as Engelland.
His skating isn't just bad, it's horriawful.

Guys like Engelland are the ones who are dime-a-dozen. Jokipakka is complementing Hamilton very nicely thus far, I think that could become a very, very good pairing in the future.
Also, Wood -- in regards to the Schlemko comparison, he's looking phenomenal this season. Sharks fans love him.

I don't think current players who can intimidate like Engelland while still being able to step up (Vancouver series playing with Brodie, for example) are that common. And he hasn't been half bad this season. But I do agree that Jokipakka is a potential trading asset, while Engelland would just be a re-sign and done, making retaining Jokipakka more important to this team moving forward

Testing the UFA market is becoming more and more risky. The stagnant salary cap and the death of bridge deals on players coming out of ELCs means less money for teams to spend on UFAs.
No question top tier UFAs like Burns will get their money, but if you are a 2nd or 3rd tier UFA taking a multi year deal from Vegas during that window may be a better option than gambling and potentially ending up with a 1 year deal for much less than expected or a PTO or even no contract.
Also no guarantee that the Vegas offer will hold up until July 1st. If a player turns them down, they may alter their expansion draft picks to fill the role that player was supposed to play, or make a trade, or move on to another UFA.

Caged Great and I both agreed that his skating was much improved at training camp, almost to an NHL-capable level.

Vegas is going to be getting 30 players in the expansion draft. Those will mostly be 3rd line forwards and bottom pairing defencemen, so they'll likely be active in free agency to fill out the top of their roster. By mid-July, they could have 35 players under contract who all played significant time in the NHL this season.
They can only have 23 players on their active roster and will need to have some spares in the AHL.
Taking a young guy who can be sent to the AHL without clearing waivers would make a lot of sense for them, especially if they're getting better NHLers from the other teams than what the Flames have available.

Arguing about Kanzig is fine, but it's a indisputable fact that there are more guys in the system (who are also closer) that could potentially replace what Jokipakka brings than what Engelland brings. Period.
You still would rather them take Engelland because he's older and slower, but you can't look to the system to replace him like you can with Jokipakka.

I don't think either player is the difference between winning and losing. Calling Jokipakka top 4 may be premature.

Probably not. If the player is unprotected and it is counted as the Vegas pick from that team, Vegas would own the player's rights before they signed him.

I find it more ridiculous that they haven't even figured this stupid expansion draft/rules yet. It's like they're just flying by the seat of their pants.

Keegan Kanzig will never play in the NHL. I'm 100% confident in that.
That said, I'd keep Jokipakka over Engelland just due to age. I really like Engelland though.

With 30 choices, picking Shinkaruk sounds plausible, another possibility is negotiating a contract in June for either Ferland or Jokipakka (RFA's)
