I know in soccer when you take on a famous number there is pressure and expectations involved in that, but some players want that number and deal with it.

Does baseball or football retire numbers?

It just feels like backwards thinking applying too much authority to nostalgia.
Yup all 4 sports retire numbers. There are no more single digit numbers for the Yankees.

I like numbers and names being honored sure, but as far as retiring numbers I see no point. I may be a number 9 and end up out performing the #9 my team has retired and because that number is retired I can never prove I was a better #9.

No, but you can always switch to a different number, like #19, and become the best #19 the team has ever had and have the team retire that number for you.

Great decision to retire all those legends. Love that they decided that, it was awesome to see Keon there. Hey Ken King you can't use the Leafs as your comparison of not retiring Flames numbers with the honor players forever a Flame garbage. Numbers of the greatest Flames deserve to be retired.
Going back to the Leafs retiring their honored numbers.
Those players are legendary greats and earned that privilege.

In soccer the numbers are based on position: if you're number 9 it means you're the main striker. If you're number 1 you're the goalkeeper. Let's say you're Brazil's striker, wearing number 9 on your back, then of course there's going to be pressure on you to live up to that lineage, but it's more pressure to perform in the role itself.

I feel like retiring numbers is pretty pointless, except in number 99’s case. Gretzky set every record imaginable and wore a completely unique number. No one in their right mind would request that number in any organisation and that's probably a sensible reflex. Beyond that, I think it's ok to move on.

I'd love to see this organization:

RETIRED
2 - Al MacInnis
9 - Lanny McDonald
12 - Jarome Iginla
14 - Theoren Fleury
30 - Mike Vernon
34 - Miikka Kiprusoff

RING OF HONOUR
7 - Joe Mullen
8 - Valeri Bure
10 - Gary Roberts
12 - Hakan Loob
14 - Kent Nilsson
20 - Gary Suter
22 - Craig Conroy
24 - Jim Peplinski
25 - Joe Nieuwendyk
28 - Robyn Regehr
29 - Joel Otto
39 - Doug Gilmour
Craig Conroy?

Just asking as a non-Flames fan, but is there really a consensus that Kiprusoff's number should be retired? That seems a bit much to me.

Couldn't If they wanted to. 99 is officially retired league wide.

I think Kipper is borderline. A case could be made either way.

Football, Baseball, Basketball, Hockey and Soccer do it.

That's enough for me Galileo.

You can hardly say soccer does, that's a bit of a stretch. Oh you're right, Montreal did, fantastic.

Retiring jersey numbers is ridiculous, imo. There's no better way to honour a player than to wear their jersey. Kids don't grow up idolising their favourite athletes by not wearing their jerseys.

Excellent list, except I would put #25 in the retired list as well. I know King has said they will no longer retire numbers but I am pretty sure #12 will be "officially" retired and not any of the 'Forever A Flame' BS. It is a disgrace that #2 got retired by St. Louis but in Calgary all they did is 'Forever A Flame' even though majority of his numbers were put up here in CGY.

Aside, I was at the Canucks and Flames game last night in Vancouver and noticed their numbers and division champion banners are all in the new green/blue/white colours. Pretty stupid that Pavel Bure's number is retired in the colours he never wore. Much like the Flames originally retiring Vernon's number in the colours he never wore....although that was fixed years later (thankfully).
