Yeah the supposed medical assistance was just as hard to watch as the impact into the boards. What the hell was that? Sit him up, roll him over, tap him on the head...its just a neck injury, haul him off as quickly as possible that's the best thing to do right?! If he wasn't permanently injured they were doing their best to increase the chances.

At least they have a stretcher now. Remember when they used a tarp to haul Martin Kariya off the ice? There was a CP thread about it.

Just so you all know spine baords have been proven to do more harm than good and are only used for extrications now.

True, we rarely use spineboards anymore, typically only to facilitate transfer between extrication point to stretcher. That said, in the presence of a obvious spinal injury, either deformity, or neuro deficit, the advantage is to secure to a spine board. The harm comes from keeping people on boards for prolonged periods of time, with pressure sores, swelling and tissue damage. It still is the ideal immobilization though. Without being there to do a quick neuro exam on him, I would likely use it in his case.

As for the twitching, yes a complete spinal injury would likely not twitch, move etc. They would be near limp immediately, but incompletes or pressure or swelling can cause errant signals and issues such as seen.

I work with a guy who is paralyzed from the waist down and had an unfortunate accident that severed his spinal cord. His legs twitch if they're positioned in a very specific way.

Yikes.

I would be highly skeptical it was a seizure so soon after impact. That looked like a guy in obvious pain though, hope he is alright

Damn, that must be terrifying being in that situation, but at least in the NHL you know you're likely getting top end medical care. Over there it must feel like your going to a prolonged final stages care. Hope the guy gets good news.

I think you are right because the most basic test they do is look for involuntary movement in the feet (or at least they do on TV )

If it wasn't for that player who was sitting on top of him (accidental) Wolski would have just gotten up before hitting the boards.

Hope he's okay. After watching that video I'm actually optimistic it's ""just"" a head injury (ie concussion).

" According to Metallurg, Wolski suffered a “fracture of the seventh and fourth cervical vertebrae injury of the cervical spinal cord, brain concussion, bruises and abrasions on the face.” He’s currently in intensive care and will likely miss the rest of the 2016-17 season."

Wolski asked Gino Reda to pass this message on:

"I never thought I'd say I got lucky after breaking my neck. But it really could have been a lot worse. Staying positive and hoping to make a full quick recovery sometime late this season."
