We gave him pp time last year and got one of the worst pp of the NHL.
And the year prior he was a key to their success. It's a 50/50 chance he goes either way this year. If he doesn't help out like he did two seasons ago, he loses his PP time and eventually gets moved at the deadline.

Not just that, but the PP was only terrible to start the season last year, from December on (maybe it was Xmas on) it was a top 10 PP. It was just so terrible to start there was no way fully recover.

Wideman isn't a terrible defenseman. He is serviceable but overpaid and given far too much ice time under Hartley. I would hope the new coaching staff will put him in better situations to succeed. If he has a solid season the Flames can trade him at the deadline or keep him if they are trying to lock up a playoff spot. Either way this is his last season with the team so fans just have to accept he's here for one more season.

If you had a time machine, would you travel back in time and:
A) Kill Hitler as a baby
B) Buyout Wideman during this off-season's buyout window
C) Not sign Wideman as a UFA in the first place
D) Do all of the above and more, it's a time machine
E) Trade him after the 14/15 season. Hudler too. And Bouma while we're at it.

Sure, everyone says they'd kill Hitler but no one mentions what an orator he was, and the worry of being put under by his silver-tongue. I mean you could end up joining!
Injuries happen. someone will want him if he produces even 60% of his 2015 numbers, give him lots of PP and offensive zone starts and maybe we'll get a nice christmas present.
Do the Flames need Wideman available for the Las Vegas "dispersal" draft? They need enough guy(s) made available with enough experience to qualify to be made available.

Watching him so far I have to agree his skating has taken another step back. He was too slow last year but made up for it with good positioning but it seems like this year he can't make up for it. He is going to be behind the play a lot.
Are there any players that are on ltir on an expiring deal that we could do a deal with? Apart from Robidas? That might be an option to move wideman and open up cap space. Acquiring team gets a player that helps them vs dead cap space. We get maybe get a conditional pick depending on how well he does and open up ltir space.
Probably a stretch but one way to open up space creatively.
No point in buying him out (which can no longer happen anyways).
In the perfect scenario, he plays bottom pairing minutes, gets PP time if he shows good offensive instincts, and is on pace for a 30-40pts season. Flip him at the dead line for another Treliving classic trade.

I don't speak German, so he had better be a damn fine orator for me to join.
