Is the sign on private property? If so, then I guess they can choose to put up whatever they want.

Just like customers can choose to not go there.

Well not quite, but I think he's certainly within his rights to put up this dumbass sign. I don't think anyone is disputing that. Dummies gonna be dumb, as they say in the bible.

Private property, but in plain sight. I am sure there are some grey areas there.

You are gently suggesting that religion underlies this sign. Given the wording and the rural area, that is a high-percentage shot. However, it is not the case. My buddy motocrosses with the owner frequently. The owner is a fairly liberal guy who had far too many beers... more of a rich-guy who acts with impunity thinking he's funny scenario.

Edit: Can't grammar or spell this early on a sunday. Also quite surprised that t@t didn't pounce all over ded reer evangelicals already.

I'll give them some credit - they have apologized in a pretty sincere way.

“I didn’t mean it to hurt people that are already hurting,” Shaw told Metro Thursday.
“I did something that was inappropriate. I admit it 100 per cent.”

It would be great if they could use their massive sign to apologize to the community.

I tend to believe him. As far as jokes go this one really sucked.

Clearly it was a joke. It's the sort of thing some people say around their family or buddies and think is really funny. Probably sounded like a good idea after that fifth beer. I doubt they thought it would be controversial at all. Which just shows how dangerous it is to presume that the people you know are representative of the community at large.

The only part that doesn't really jive with that is the whole ridiculous excuse about not having enough space to accommodate another bathroom.

Anyone who has ever driven through Gasoline Alley should be surprised that this is considered humour in Red Deer.

Gasoline Alley isn't in Red Deer.

It's the only Red Deer most people know. That, and giggling as you drive by "BJ Services".

And yes, Red Deer itself is actually quite nice.

No, ZERO credit given.

If this was the 80's/90's and was met with majority approval, and only offended a few, he would have left the sign up and felt like a hero.

The only reason this idiot feels bad, is because he knows he's jeopardized his business. I hope his business goes bankrupt. And I find it laughable that the majority of the outrage is coming from Calgary/Edmonton commentors, when you look at the FB outrage. The only ones I've seen defending it are.... yup, customers from RD.

You are perfectly entitled to have whatever opinion you want behind closed doors. Although you are entitled to have this opinion on a billboard as well, you are too moronic to own a business and deserve to be shut down if you put it on your front lawn.
