This could be another example of BT literally making sure he is in on everything

BT famous saying - it is part of the process and we are just doing our diligence. I had to go there...

I'd like seidenberg if engelland goes. I'd rather keep wideman and have a chance at him doing well rather than having engelland who's a 6/7 who doesn't offer much.

Seidenberg looks serviceable in this game against USA.

Just saying.

Engelland is one of the few guys who stood up for his teammates last season. There's more to players than the scoresheet.

If the Flames can trade Wideman + something small like the equivalent of a 3rd for Hayes and then sign Seidenberg, that would pretty much be perfect in my opinion. Wideman makes 5.25, Hayes 2.3 for 2 years. Even if you were to eat a million or two of that contract and give the balance to a UFA D-man, that would be a shrewd move of the Flames part.

FWIW, Steve Simmons says Ottawa is likely to sign Seidenberg

I think this could be a case of BT preparing to protect Jokipakka in next summers expansion draft.

If Jokipakka cements a roll in our top 4 this season, then we need to protect him, and unless the Flames sign a Dman to a multi-year contract shortly, it is not possible to protect Jokipakka in the expansion draft.

Before anyone points it out - yes, I am implying BT would choose to protect 8 skaters versus 7 forwards + 3 defense, if Joki plays his way into our top 4.

We need to be prepared for that scenario, and as of today, we are not:

* All Clubs must meet the following minimum requirements regarding players exposed for selection in the Expansion Draft:
"i) One defenseman who is a) under contract in 2017-18 and b) played in 40 or more NHL games the prior season OR played in 70 or more NHL games in the prior two seasons."

Until we sign another d-man (Niklas Grossman! Come on down!), or re-sign 1 of Engellend or Wideman to an extension (nope, nope, nope), we are in a position where we must expose 1 of Giordano/Brodie/Hamilton/Jokipakka.

I suppose there is another scenario for protecting Jokipakka; dress 1 of Kulak/Wotherspoon/Culkin for 70 games this season, only to expose them in the summer. This would be really stupid.

Expect Dennis Seidenberg is sign with the Islanders and join the team after the World Cup.

7 teams were in on Seidenberg, including Ottawa. All wanted to wait, but Isles step up. 1 yr, $1 million. Good deal.
