LTIR cap relief does not come into effect until the first game of the season. If a team is waiting to sign someone with cap space from relief by a player on LTIR, that player would miss all training camp. Unless amount over the camp falls in the allowable % over prior to season starting.

You could sign Gaudreau to 8.5M even, sign Nakladal to 1.5M, place Bennett and Shinkaruk in AHL to 'start' the season. Place Smid on LTIR, recall the 2 young players and you end up with the roster you see on Generalfanger (without Higgins). If Smid is certain to go on the LTIR, there's no holding up of Nakladal's contract. If he is uncertain, then it makes sense but then you got to question why Nakladal would be waiting to see, pretty bad position if Smid is good to go and he's jobless.

A paper transaction to get below the cap before placing Smid on LTIR and immediately calling them up after, before the first game of the season...

Nothing extra interesting in that article, read it also during the week, but he only said that there is some interest from NHL, on the other hand, there is still possibility he will play elsewhere. Said also in one interview, that when you start to play in NHL, you want to play there forever, unbeliavable difference from hockey in Europe.
He is not so much interested in any negotiation now, because of WC. Heard it also somewhere else :-)
He prepared like last year, only tried to hit the ice more often.
He want to have a good tournament and will see what will be next.
You ´re welcome guys :-)
You can be sure that if I will find something interesting in the near future, I will post it!

I wonder what they were looking for from Nak that they didn't see in him. Because he looked like a legit 3rd pairing d-man to me

I said it before, but it bears repeating. The Flames won't sign any of Russell, Nakladal, or anyone else out there until they have an idea of what Gaudreau will cost. That's the major determining factor for any other contract's AAV signed this year.

Czech play-by-play commentators during the Russia game now talking about Nakladal. They said they are suprised he is not signed as of now in CGY. Said Flames managment was very satisfied with him last season. They were talking about big contracts, mentioned Monny. Also mentioned that there are some signs of Flames trying to get rid of some contract and that this is the reason Nak is still not signed. I was very surprised that they were talking about Flames for so long. So this is what I heard from Czech play-by play men. They also said they are convinced he will be back in CGY. Interesting.
If you are watching CZE-RUS game now, Nak is playing great, I love his play, few minutes ago it was him who incredibly prevented by his stick Ovechkin to score. Awesome play!

I'd rather sign Nak than Russell 10x out of 10.

The other problem with signing him is that we have too many RD. We have Brodie, Hamilton, Engelland and Wideman already.

Also, Nak could be a 5th RHD on this team.
Gio - Brodie
Joki - Hamilton
Engelland - Nak
Wideman

Id rather give a shot to one of the following than to clog the blueline with another vet:
- Kulak
- Culkin
- Andersson
- Kylington
- Wotherspoon
I can't imagine these guys like their chances if the blueline has no openings. There's already Giordano, Brodie, Hamilton, Wideman, Jokipakka, and Engelland, as well as the question mark in Smid, who will likely want one more crack at it. The only way I would support signing Nakladal is if Wideman was traded, Smid is on LTIR, or management were willing to bury a high priced defenseman such as Wideman, Smid or Engelland

Brodie has mostly played RD and looked awkward last year when Hartley tried him on the left side

At the end of this coming season we are going to lose Wideman Engelland and Smid. We might lose Kevin too in the expansion draft. Leaving us with 3 dmen!
Is Wotherspoon ready? I would say he is. Kulak maybe. Kylington, Hickey, and Andersson? Those are some really young guys especially for D.
Signing Nak could bridge that gap. Let our prospects develop properly!
I wont be devastated if we dont sign Nak, yet I do think it would be a good signing. Allows us low cost options.
Nak played well for us. Did not look out of place at the NHL level. Not looking out of place in the World Cup of hockey. A 5 6 dman that plays in the World cup of Hockey makes my team easily as a 5 6 dman.
