In Jammie's defence I would point out that the UK is so small that wherever you live it's easy to get into town and find interesting things to do, personally when I had a chance I love being outside town in the UK, their are footpaths every where you get to wander through the fields from village pub to village pub, through bucolic hedgerows across hobbit like stiles (an ancient step system to get you over a fence) it's one of the things I miss most about the UK.
In Canada going for a hike is a serious affair, in the UK it's an after Sunday lunch afterthought that ends at a pub somewhere with the whole family
