Am I the only one that assumed the loon already was our national bird?

Red Tailed Hawk would be my vote. Northern Flicker's are also an awesome bird...

Whiskey Jack is mighty convincing since it does not leave for the winter, unlike most pansy birds.

I figure that if the animal is on your money it is in some way Nationally endorsed.

It wasn't supposed to be a loon - the original design was a Voyageur but the dies were lost/stolen in transit between Ottawa and the Winnipeg Mint.

Thats even better.

"Its supposed to be a Voyageur."

- "Well it isnt gunna be because Phil in the mail room lost the dies to a one-eyed Hungarian in a back-alley game of craps."

"Goddammit Phil! That Bastard! Alright...well...the country needs money. What do we have lying around in the scratch and dent bin?"

- "Um....I think this is a Loon?"

"Jesus...goddammit! I'll kill Phil! A Loon? WTF even is that? You know what? I dont care. I really dont. Loon it is. Slap the dies in and lets go, its half price cheeseburgers at Chotchkies."

I have a mental picture of Phil convincing the one-eyed Hungarian (in late 1986) that these are the official dies for Canada's new $1 coin and he will be able to stamp them out by the thousands without fear of detection. Of course 6 months later the "loonie" is launched and the poor one-eyed Hungarian has a garage full of $1 voyageur coins that are now worthless. Now the one-eyed Hungarian vows to find Phil and torture him. Sad story really.

I think all of you are common loons, so really I feel this was a successful vote.

Dang - didn't notice the voting deadline. I posted after I voted, and I voted after hearing it on the radio.
