Would rather go with what we have and let guys like Kulak and Wotherspoon fight it out for the sixth spot. Too many budding guys on the blueline we need to see develop with NHL time, signing Russell is both redundant (given our depth) and not a good message to send to the younger guys.

Only way I want Russell is on a 1 year $2.5m deal, and Wideman must be traded first.

Trading Wideman and bringing Russell in on a 1 year deal worth less than Wideman makes would be a win even if above 2.5

1 year deal being the key

If it's a two-year you can expose him to Vegas

I'd rather they take him than Jokipakka, and I think they would.

Not sure about that. Vegas is going to be able to pick from a huge pool of 4/5 guys, I'm not sure Russell makes the cut when you factor in size, age and contract status (presumably pending UFA with 1 year left). There will be younger, more cost controlled guys available who are every bit as effective.

The only player the Flames need to sign for purpose of exposing in the draft is a goalie. Which is a whole other issue. I still think Vegas uses more picks on older prospects than lower tier NHLers.
