I do think it's a bit unfair to call out Genie, there are so many athletes that do the same. Maybe it is part of her struggles this year, but I suspect it's a small part, compared to all the other pressures she has in her life.
Serena is constantly on social media, she snap chats all the time! She has also had a lot longer to learn how to deal with everything coming her way.
This week my friend and fellow Olympic Champ boatsman, Adam Kreek made a mistake that I hope can prove to be a learning experience. While chatting with Ron McLean on CBC television, he expressed his opinion that Eugenie Bouchard may not be committed to winning, evidenced by her selfies, interest in fashion and social media presence.
This is the kind of tired, regressive, paternalistic, arrogant and sexist commentary that female athletes put up with all the time, and it needs to stop.
I don’t think the burden of defense rests solely on the capable shoulders of my female teammates. If men don’t call out men when we are being sexist, then we are not a part of the solution, and the problem persists. So here I am, calling out my friend Adam Kreek. Adam, you were sexist on television last night.
Totally nonsensical criticism.
There are a lot of disparities between men and women but criticism for commitment is not one.
Male athletes are constantly criticized for similar things. In fact, they almost get it worse. It is expected (often wrongly) of a female athlete to keep up her appearance and take advantage of her marketing ability.
Lewis Hamilton, arguably the most famous non-soccer male athlete in the world, routinely gets absolutely ripped to shreds in the media for his selfies, obsession with fashion and social media presence.
Is there net front presence and big bodies in women's water polo?
He actually couldn't help but talk about hockey at every opportunity. He compared one American girl to Johnathan Toews. And yes he did talk about the US having big bodies up front as well as their tremendous depth in goaltending.

Yup, Ronaldo too. He just sits on a beach somewhere and someone thinks he's gay.
