George Carlin would have loved these olympics.
Quote:
George Carlin: When I was a little boy in New York City in the 1940s, we swam in the Hudson River, and it was filled with raw sewage, okay? We swam in raw sewage! You know, to cool off. And at that time, the big fear was polio. Thousands of kids died from polio every year. But you know something? In my neighborhood, no one ever got polio. No one, ever! You know why? 'Cause we swam in raw sewage! It strengthened our immune systems! The polio never had a prayer. We were tempered in raw s**t!

There are bad stories before every Olympics. I'm sure it'll look incredibly shiny and wonderful, and will be a smashing success.

Yeah I don't buy all of the bad stories and so on. Expert says this, expert says that. Internet outrage!

If these things has any merit, don't you think US and Canada would ban their athletes from attending?

Also happens to coincide with the building of venues for the 2014 World Cup - then once that all stopped the GDP declined again.

Women's soccer starts today - didn't realize the tournament started before the opening ceremonies. Anyway, the game is at 12:00 MST against Australia, and is being shown on CBC. Not sure about the streaming options though.

EDIT: See Mango's post below for streaming links

so far this Olympics has the makings of being the worst Olympics ever.

I feel sad for the athlete's - some of whom have spent a lifetime working towards getting to this spot and there seem to be a lot of potential problems for them to deal with.

i'll bet that a job working for the IOC must be the sweetest gig ever

It's really a shame because I usually love the Olympics and glue myself to the TV for 2 weeks, but the desire just isn't there this time. Not sure if this is just related to all the Rio stuff or what - but it almost bums me out!
I think the nice soccer win gets people into the olympic spirit.
and then there's this too

271 out of 400 Russian Athletes that arrived in Rio have been approved to compete. Even 1 track athlete got in despite the track team being banned. Why? Cause she's hot. The Olympics aren't stupid.

The Olympic cauldron will be lit inside the Maracanã. In April 2016, Rio Organizing Committee spokesperson Mario Andrada stated that organizers had planned to move the Olympic cauldron to a public location near the Port of Rio de Janeiro following the opening ceremony, most likely near the Candelária Church, rather than have it in one of the main stadiums. This move would be similar to that of the 2010 Winter Olympics, where the official cauldron was located outside the Vancouver Convention Centre but lit in a separate ceremony that immediately followed the conclusion of the opening ceremony proper, which took place in a domed, indoor stadium that would have inhibited public viewing.
Thank goodness. We don't need to see Gretzky standing on the back of a truck again.
