Apparently Vermette's NMC expired on July 1st.

Craig Morgan @craigsmorgan
Just received a clarification: Antoine Vermette's no-move clause was only for 1 year; expired on July 1 so that was not an issue.

This just reinforces that there will be A LOT of veterans who'll be scrambling for anything they can get.

Basically, if you're any bit past your better days (or perceived to be), and say north of 30, you'll be struggling just to stay in the league. Just ask Curtis Glencross, or heck, even Lee Stempniak.

Welcome to the new NHL.

Pretty sure Stempniak already signed a nice deal this off season and still has about 18 other teams he hasn't played for so far in his career so he should be fine going forward.

2 years with the Canes at 2.5MM a season.

Right. But don't forget at the beginning of last year before Stempniak had gone on to show he's still got good game left in his tank, he had to settle for a PTO with Jersey before getting a proper 1 year deal with those Devils.

Then he parlayed that into his current deal with the Canes.

This shows why a fringe player signs a long low money contract. Rather play in the league then get caught in a numbers crunch and be replaced by a younger Elc contract

The Coyotes still need some defense. Maybe this was a move they needed to make in order for a Wideman deal to happen..

Huh? The Coyotes have arguably too many defencemen

Nobody is buying out players to get in on the Dennis Wideman sweepstakes. (there are no Dennis Wideman sweepstakes)

Odd move by Arizona. For a budget team they sure like flushing money down the crapper. Thanks again Glendale tax-payers.

I thought the buy-out window was over long ago (unless arbitration re-opened the door).

Arbitration opened a 2nd window. Coyotes last arbitration case was settled with Micheal Stone a few days ago.

This is perplexing. What are the Coyotes trying to accomplish?

Wonder if the Flames will be in on him.

Vermette just lost $1.25 million dollars because of the buyout. He is also put in a bad negotiating position. Unlike if he was a free agent on July 1st, a lot of potential teams are out of the question, as they have already committed their cap dollars. There is a good chance that he signs for much less than the $1.25 million.
Yeah but there's no guarantee he'll sign for your team. You can grab him for free right now if you put in a claim. If you have the room and need a Center, it'd be easier to claim him

Are we talking about the same guy? He is a forward.

Damn, I was thinking of Ottawa's shot blocking d-man. Name escapes me. Thanks for the clarification!

Vermette is one of the best face-off guys in the league. Flames as a team are one of the worst. He had 17 goals and 38 points last year. Treliving should consider picking him up. Only problem is Flames will then need to move out some salary.
