Does this interview really say anything? Would they ever say anything different in the media?

They probably wouldn't say anything different, but they could certainly say a lot less.

Yup damned if you do or damned if you don't.

No quotes from Monahan/Gaudreau: "Why aren't they talking?!?!? Negotiations must be bad."

Positive quotes from Monahan/Gaudreau: "What else do you expect them to say?!?!?!"

Niewendyk and Gilmour definitely walked out on the Flames to force a trade.

If I remember correctly with MacInnis, his contract was up and - instead of signing him for the BIG money of the time - they traded him (Housley deal). I'm also sitting here thinking an offer sheet may have been involved by St Louis, but it's long enough ago I don't remember clearly.

I believe St. Louis threw a gigantic (for the time) offer sheet at MacInnis; the Flames matched and then traded MacInnis to the Blues because they would rather have Housley than the RFA compensation.

Looks like that myth has been busted.
Shocking that's what they'd say to the media....... I don't think they are bad guys at all, but what else would you expect?

But if you take what they said in the media as gospel, I have some magic elixir I'd like to sell you, just PM me.

No, he saw Ferkland destroy the Canucks. Ferland, unfortunately, is the guy that's been playing for the Flames in his place ever since. Ferkland is a core player that any rebuilding franchise would love to have. Ferland is a warm body used to fill up a roster sheet on game days.

I actually like what they have to say.

They hired an agent to get them the best deal, so they let the agent do the work. The more money the player makes, the more money the agent makes, therefore you let the agent go to work.

They are focused on hockey and other things 21 year olds like. In a way, I'm glad it appears they are aloof of the negotiation because it spares them from seeing Negotiator Brad who is very likely talking the players down to achieve the best deal for the club. If they had to listen and witness all of that, it might affect their confidence when he becomes Boss Brad again.

I wonder if the NHLPA has a standard orientation / training week for all players joining the NHL for the first time to educate them through the various things they need to know about as players including things like how to interview and speak to media... Now that I think through this I'm guessing definitely.

I think you have Al Macinnis mixed up with Scott Stevens.

No.

From the Wikipedia article on MacInnis:

Quote:
Following five consecutive seasons where the Flames failed to advance past the first round of the playoffs, both MacInnis and the team were looking for a change in the summer of 1994. Though the Flames made an offer of C$2.5 million per season for MacInnis, he instead signed an offer sheet with the St. Louis Blues for US$3.5 million a season for four years, making him the fourth highest [paid] player in the NHL. As MacInnis was a restricted free agent, the Blues sent defenceman Phil Housley and two second round draft picks to the Flames in compensation while also receiving a fourth round selection back.
The compensation would have been draft picks only, but Doug Risebrough arranged the trade so that the Flames would receive Housley instead.

Yeah, they pretty much do, or at least NHL organizations do in general. I recall the Flames twitter this year saying the Flames prospects at dev camp were having social media training. Also saw a tweet once that the Jets prospects once were getting a social media run-down and they used Tyler Seguin's old tweets about what not to do.

I believe the NHLPA does a general orientation, and the teams themselves do media training each year as well.

I don't mind that these guys seem to trust their agents, and want to focus on hockey.

There must be a smell test where they could hypothetically be presented with a lowball offer from Tre that they couldn't live with but I can't see Tre being daft enough to piss off his franchise talent.

Glad it's not Lamoriello as GM here, and that as far as we know their agents are not guys like Eagleson.

Brad should be negotiating deals that give the team enough room to ice a team that they can win with, and they should get it. The optics in this economy of someone being unreasonable would not sit well and I expect reasonable deals all around.
