Brassard won't bomb with the Senators but he's already likely peaked and they traded a 23 year old already on the same level as Brassard that hasn't yet peaked. It's just another one of those mind boggling moves by a Senators organization that continues it's endless sideways trajectory.

Why do organizations continue to throw the Rangers a bone? Anytime they get close to salary cap jail it seems there's always a team or two willing to bail them out. For good merit they even managed to hoodwink the Senators into throwing them a 2nd round for the right to help out the Rangers. The Rangers needed this deal way more than the Senators did. Can't wait to see which team bails them out of the Rick Nash deal.

Brassard is also a much more well-rounded player. the deal is closer than it looks.

Putting age aside, it's not that lopsided. Brassard is a pretty damned good player, including in the playoffs. Zebanejad might be younger, but getting the younger player doesn't always equate to winning a trade.

The 2nd rounder is a bit puzzling, but to me that means that the Rangers weren't really looking to unload him so the Sens had to sweeten the deal.

I feel like they bought the 2nd for $2 million.

The real Melnyk factor here is that Zibanejad will be RFA after this season. So if he has another season like the past season he's due for a new deal with 2 years under team control, and due a pretty big raise. At the end of the day, Melnyk, is spending 10 ish million for this production in the next three years as opposed to spending 13 for it.

Absolutely money was a factor due to the penny pinching owner but they did take on Phaneuf's contract so it's hard to figure out sometimes what this organization is doing. It appears they are tooling to make a run in the immediate future but I'm not sure if the team is good enough.

Melnyk was probably also factoring in the saving on one less letter for the name plate.

They took on the Phaneuf contract but got rid of nearly 16M of deadspace cap-space in that trade for a net difference of ~20M over the next 5 years. Forgetting cap for a second, that meant they got 2/3 defenseman they desperately needed for "4M" a year. Something that would have cost a lot more in free agency.

This trade they save money, minimally, today and if Zibnajed has a season like Brassard is expected to, they save a lot over the next 3 years.

They're trying to compete while handicapped by the budget, and I think they are doing an alright job at it.

This trade came out of nowhere(not big as the Hall and Subban trades) but I think the Sens would have kept Zibanejad, I really hope there is a trade for the Flames that is out of no where.

I actually like this for the Sens. I think Brassard is an upgrade and will continue to be an upgrade for at least the next few years.

Brassard is the better player. He is also just the type of player they need. And though he is older, he will probably cost less over the next 3 years (while production will likely be very similar).

Also, I have always thought Zinbanejad is over-rated. He puts up the occasional, nice youtube highlight, but he is one-dimensional and inconsistent. He tends to put up points when the going is less tough.

Throwing in the 2nd round pick is puzzling though.

I agree. I think Sens improve with this trade, even though they traded the guy with the higher "offensive" ceiling.

Hmmm....thats tough competition but maybe its time to see if Bill Quackenbush has a kid trying to break into the league?

Or maybe sign Zarley Zalapski and spell the whole name out? Or just Z. Zalapski.

Never been very impressed by Zibanejad, seems like a one-dimensional player. I think Brassard is and will continue to be the better player.

Actual dollars for Brassard is $10M over 3 years - I think that is good value for the Sens.
