Funny, I have been debating almost this exact thing- I'm looking for a small SUV or an AWD Wagon to replace my Forester XT, which has been a great car, but I'm looking for something that gets better mileage and maybe a little more room for the family for trips etc.
Was looking at a Grand Cherokee at first and when I finally drove one, it was just ok to me.
Thinking a Passat Wagon, maybe a Mazda CX7 or newer Honda CRV. I have a higher budget and am in no hurry so I just keep cruising Kijjiji from work. Any suggestions for a powerful SWD wagon or small SUV/ crossover welcome!

They are a bunch of squares, but they are probably the most reliable and unbiased source when it comes to technical reviews. Unlike pretty much everyone else, they buy their own cars instead of getting one from a manufacturers fleet. They also do not rely on advertising revenue from the very thing they are reviewing (unlike say Motor Trend, which is barely above being a press release with nice pictures).
Also for the OPs initial question, I hate to see another go to that darkside of crossovers, but if I was forced to get one, I find the Volvo XC60 is a nice balance of style, practicality and is still relatively ok to drive for a crossover. The inline 6 in those things is really powerful and smooth (plus the R design has 325hp).

I've been pretty positive about the Tuscon that I bought to replace my jeep. It rides well, its got really good fuel economy. Its got a really good cockpit design as well. Its also quiet which I like.
The only draw back so far is that the steering isn't the most exciting thing in the world.

Mother in law has this one, I have an MDX. Obviously I prefer the MDX and that's what I came to suggest. If it's out of the price point, and so is an RDX then I'd go CRV.

I've got an 09 Lexus GX470, it's an excellent SUV, incredibly well built.
A little hard on gas, but not awful.

Their reliability data is useful.
Their highest rated vehicles are usually things like BMWs (they don't consider reliability data in their ratings).
They then have a recommended list, which is a combination of the two.

My wife has a 2013 or 15 Escape SEL, she like it lots of power handles snow ice well with winter tires.
I have a 2011 Duango Citadel which I completely love.

Don't buy a Fiat because they're stupid. They're Smart Cars for people who are still trying to get laid.
The Germans make the best cars in the world. BMW, Merc, Audi, VW, all of them at highway speeds feel so much more solid than anything else available. I don't know what everyone else is doing to their cars, but they're ####ing up. I do not for the life of me understand how someone can engineer a Dodge Caravan, drive it for real and go 'yeah, good enough'.
The Japanese make solid, dependable stuff. There's only a few that'll set your hair on fire, but if you need a minivan or a Rav4 type, it's hard for me to sit here and say don't get one. Not a whole lot of fun, but that's just me.

You can already buy an Alfa in Canada...the 4C has been available for a couple of years now. The Giulia sedan should be coming next year too.

There are a few Alfa dealers in Canada ( https://www.alfaromeo.ca/car-shopping/dealers) but none in Alberta just yet.
I saw a 4C in town a little while ago...it was quite stunning. Just wish it came in a stick.

I drive an older m3, so I agree with you, but German isn't in the cards for her budget.
