I'm surprised the guy who traded Filip Forsberg for a bad old rental and middling prospect could find a job anywhere again.
There's bad trades and then there's BAD trades. That was the latter.

Totally, and it isnt like people can ever learn from mistakes like that. We may as well cancel his cable and forbid him from ever watching a hockey game again while we're at it!

Desperate move by a desperate GM who could feel it slipping away.
He did tear that team down to a tiny little nub and build it into a contender from scratch, and keep it there. Just couldn't get over the hump.
90% of that 121 point, President's Cup winning roster is still his doing.

I know you're being sarcastic, but would you trust the guy to run a hockey team after that move? Literally everyone that follows hockey was left scratching their head.
If you could pick from anyone, anywhere to run your hockey team, would you hire the guy who traded one of the best prospects in the league (at the time) for peanuts?
History repeats itself -- see: Chiarelli getting mugged on trading both Seguin and Hall during separate jobs.

I think Chiarelli might be the biggest troll in professional sports.
Dont forget he also had a hamd in the lopsided Hamilton trade as well.

What about the previous 16 years of solid GMing prior to that one bad trade?

kind of wished they went in a different direction. Wanted to see the experiment of a new expansion team building through full analytics cause it's never been done before.

Depends who that guy's AGMs/POHO/ProScouts are. While the GM deservedly takes the heat for bad moves, a lot of these moves are collective management team decisions.

I don't actually believe the bolded statement. I feel he was high middle tier prospect when he was dealt, but this is my opinion and you have yours.
As for McPhee being the new GM for LV, I say good for him lets see what he can do with them.

You were hoping owners of a professional sports franchise were open to someone using their team as an experiment?

But hey, after trading 1/4 of the Flames team to the Leafs for peanuts, including Doug Gilmour, Doug Risebrough was entrusted to guide the Minnesota Wild and he... oh wait. Never mind, nothing to see here.

We did get Gary Leeman - a 50 goal scorer. What an epic failure of a trade.

I think it's a good hire if he can bring in a similar amateur scouting group he had in Washington as that Capitals team as it is today was built mostly through the draft.

We should never make a multi player trade with TO. We could have gotten so much more for Neon Dion. We got a bunch of spare parts that Burke wanted to get rid of for months

Forsberg was anything but a sure fire prospect at the time of that trade. He could've easily busted, Erat could've helped them win the cup. He gambled and lost.
He was at the helm for nearly 17 years.
http://dc.sbnation.com/2010/6/28/154...geny-kuznetsov
He drafted Ovechkin, Carlson, Alzner, Holtby, Backstrom, Johanssen, Orlov, Kuznetsov, Grabuaer, Wilson, Burakovsky all key guys on that team currently and other guys who had good runs with them or still playing decent in Green, Semin, Perrault, Oduya, Varlamov, Forsberg. Many of these guys were later round picks.
Multiple role players in Eakin, Schultz, Pettinger, Sutherby, Beech, Boynton, Gordon, Eminger, Fehr, Neuvirth.
-Half the current roster was drafted by him, not just signed or traded, he drafted more then half their current roster.
-By my quick count in his 17 years he almost produced a top 6 forward or a top 4 dman or a roster goalie on an yearly basis PLUS several depth guys.
It's too bad people remember him by his one bad deal. I'm glad the Vegas management doesn't. He's a solid GM.

I don't know why, but I'm kind of surprised that they're rolling out a GM announcement before they announce the team name, logo, colours, etc.
But I suppose the GM will need to hire a lot of staff positions and get scouts out in the field very soon if they want to have any chance of drafting well next summer at either the expansion draft or entry draft. McPhee will be a busy man.

It will be interesting to see the role of Murray Craven in this new management team. He has been working with Foley to make this team happen. The Whitefish Montana connection is strong.
