Sign up Monahan at $6.25M for 8 years and call it a day. 8 years x $50M is a nice round number anyways.
I dunno, I think 8x50 would be a little much.

Other notable stats between the two for last year:

  • Both players had 13 multi point games last year
  • Both players had 7 power play goals, however Monahan had 21 powerplay points to Scheifele's 11
  • Monahan had 30 less penalty minutes than Scheifele last year
  • Monahan won 363 more faceoffs and took approximately 500 more draws, Monahan's faceoff percentage was 51.02% to Scheifele's 44.24%

Agreed, I don't like the Hero chart as a comparison but I figured some people would like to see it. Also think since both teams went from playoff team to bottom 10 from 14/15 to 15/16 that it is more apt to compare year to year

Cheveldayoff says Scheifele deal includes ltd no-trade clause (10 teams) in UFA-covered years.

In Scheifele's defense he wasn't given the 1st line opportunities that Monahan had at that age. The second half of this year was his 1st real opportunity at 1st line center and he flourished

Looking at the comparable contracts I'd say
Monahan 6.3 x 8 (same AAV as MacKinnon)
Gaudreau 6.75 x 8

But in Monahan's defence he's played his whole career for a team that doesn't play any sort of puck possession system at all. I believe HERO charts try to account for this but I'm skeptical that the model translates perfectly from a high-possession team like Winnipeg to a horrible possession team like the Hartley led Flames. I wouldn't be surprised to see his shot generation stats take a jump this year with a more possession focused system.

These hero charts make every Flames player look terrible. Than again the team has been for 7 of the last 8 years with the one good one being a fluke...

Monahans worth 5 most according to those charts. 3rd line possession guy.
