Ducks are a budget team. They don't have the money to make big splashes.
Also helps they blew some of their budget on bad Bieksa and Kesler extensions.

Anaheim drafts too well. This curse will never end.
They're cheap, but they draft so well that they easily get away with it. Plus who wouldn't love living in Orange County. They have more good young players wanting to take less money to play there than they can afford to keep.
I expect Bernier will play great for them

BE (Before Elliott) I would have been very happy with the flames picking up Bernier for a conditional pick.
Less salary but more cap hit and had to give up even less than #35 depending on what the conditional draft pick is.
Last year no Goalies available.... This year lots of goalies available.
In Bingo's goalie process neither Bernier nor Elliott was considered as a reasonable viable option.

Bernier was apparently suppose to be part of the Andersen deal but the Ducks didn't want to pay the bonus. Sorry no link, heard this on the radio.

Actually that makes a lot of sense. Money doesnt matter to the Leafs, but the Ducks have a budget and Bernier was basically worthless.
A conditional pick.
If I were a GM I'd have fun with Conditional Picks.
"If Bernier gains 5 pounds and accrues fewer than 3 speeding tickets during the season its a 7th rounder, if he loses 7.265 pounds and makes 17 poke-checks then its a 7th and a steak dinner!"

I think it's quite plausible...
Bernier's stat line in California (with Kings) just as good, if not more impressive than Andersen's California-induced numbers (with Ducks)...

conditions now known. Essentially Bernier needs to start half of the playoffs and make it to the cup finals or the Ducks got Bernier for nothing. http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/b...bernier-trade/
Quote:
The details of the conditional pick weren’t disclosed by either team when the transaction was completed. They are:
— If Bernier starts half of Anaheim’s playoff games next spring and the Ducks win the Stanley Cup, Toronto receives the Ducks’ 2017 second-round pick. (If Anaheim doesn’t still own that selection, it will transfer its next available second-rounder from a future year.)
— If Bernier starts half of Anaheim’s playoff games next spring and the Ducks lose in the Stanley Cup Final, Toronto receives the Ducks’ 2017 third-round pick. (If Anaheim doesn’t still own that selection, it will transfer its next available third-rounder from a future year.)
— Should Anaheim trade Bernier to a team that starts him in half of its playoff games next spring and wins the Stanley Cup, Toronto receives the Ducks’ second-round pick.
— Should Anaheim trade Bernier to a team that starts him in half of its playoff games next spring and loses in the Stanley Cup Final, Toronto receives the Ducks’ third-round pick.
If none of those things happen, the Leafs will receive no tangible return for Bernier beyond the useful cap space the move created.

Wow, and I thought I was being creative with the conditions on the pick, they literally found a way to trade Bernier for hopes and dreams.
I'm actually a little surprised that the League was cool with that.

In the cap space world you have to consider the cap savings in any deal. If the Flames could trade Wideman for the similar return I would be thrilled.
