Their smartest move this draft may have been to sit still. From what it sounded like, Chiarelli sniffed out that Columbus wasn't going to take Puljujarvi even if they kept their 3rd pick, and backed out from making any deals. That was pretty shrewd...probably to our detriment.
Obviously when it comes to their current Dman situation though, they did zip, which is a fail in that aspect.

Er...nope. He like everyone else expected Columbus to take Puljujarvi:

He wasn't shrewd, he was lucky.

I still don't understand the logic of Columbus not trading down with Calgary/Vancouver/Edmonton. Even if it was only for an additional 2nd, why not add the asset and come away with the same player?

Unlikely they'd still get Dubois at sixth overall. Even if Edmonton takes Sergachev, Vancouver takes Dubois and might even take him at third if they traded.

They were convinced they could only get Dubois at #3 or #4. So I guess the Oilers didn't offer enough to move up.
The Canucks loving Dubois appears to be not much of a secret.

So, why not trade Edmonton for the 4th OA and a 4th rounder (or whatever the offer was) to drop a spot?

Loser: Jesse Puljujarvi
Poor kid trains all his life and loves hockey more than anything and he gets sent to Siberia for it.
Winners: Overage players
50 prospects taken were eligible for last year's draft, an insane number. Either last years draft was even better than we thought, or this year's is worse. I think its a bit of both.

I think the big loser of the draft is Columbus, for not getting an additional pick while selecting Dubois.
The winners are Phoenix, Calgary and Edmonton.

Arizona have to be considered the draft winners.
DeAngelo - one of the most offensively talented Dmen prospects in the world
Chychrun - still arguably the best defenseman in the 2016 draft
Keller - arguably the most skilled offensive player not named Auston Matthews in the 2016 draft
Dineen - one of the most offensive Dmen in the 2016 draft
In terms of concentrated talent they came away with the most.

got 3 young defensemen and also signed Goligoski. Doing more to improve their defense in one weekend than the Oilers have done in multiple years.

Jarmo played it like a rookie GM though, he should have sweated Chiarelli into a trade by yapping with Benning and Treliving. He showed his hand on not wanting a pure winger and Chiarelli read him like an open book. And the deal should have been with Vancouver as he should have known Edmonton would likely have taken Tkachuk over Dubois.
Poor management not to take advantage of your position.

If Edmonton realizes they get their guy at 4th still why give up assets to move up one?

Based on the last ten drafts, it is pretty safe to say that the biggest losers will be:
Tyler Benson
Markus Niemelainen
Matthew Cairns
Filip Berglund
Dylan Wells
Graham McPhee
Aapeli Rasanen
Vincent Desharnais

Don't want to sound like a homer, but the Jets went from 6th overall to drafting the best scoring prospect in years thanks to the draft lotto. Huge winners with luck involved.

If Kekalainen played a better hand, he might have convinced Chiarelli that either the Canucks or the Flames would have moved up to 3rd and taken Puljujarvi. Then, it would all depend on how much more Chiarelli valued Puljujarvi more than Tkachuk.
I do think Kekalainen messed up in not acquiring value there.

Flames got an A- Loved the whole draft except called Parsons a Reach
Canucks got a B+ here, lots here have them as losers but he said he liked the draft, thinks Lockwood/Candella could look really good going forward and liked Juolevi
Edmonton A- Really liked the Benson pick, said he should have gone mid-1st
Dallas and Washington lowest with "C" grades

I am really not focused on other clubs, but I think we came out ahead big time after this weekend. We picked up our #1 goalie for a song and had arguably the #4 ranked player fall to us at #6.

I wish I had a crystal ball to look into the future and see what Boston has been thinking the past 2 drafts. If all these "reaches" they've picked pan out, they might look like geniuses. But even still, why not trade down for some of these guys who EVERYONE else had ranked 30-50 picks later.

The only reason the Canucks would even be considered losers is the lack of picks. Juolevi was the right pick for them. With the organization desperately needing a full rebuild I think taking the Dman over the winger was right for them.
