Sounds like they expect someone to go off the board or they have included someone not on the consensus list. I think it is the latter.

also, on alex nylander "top 5 skill guy in the draft"
This was an interesting comment. He's a top five "skill guy" in the draft, but what does that mean for his ranking on their list? The Flames use a lot of factors in player selection so what about the others?

The tidbit that caught my ear was who they have been following for a long time. They said they know two of the kids from when they started to play, those being Brown and Chychrun. Spoke highly of their character and the Flames value that. First time I've really heard them mentioned by the Flames, but some really positive words about them.

After listening to that, sounds to me like he loves Sergachev a ton more than the others. There was a notable level of excitement in his tone over the others he spoke of.

If Conroy is tipping his hand at all, sure sounds like the Flames are keying on a forward at 6 (if they stay there).

I too felt Conroy gave away the fact they are targeting a forward, not a defenseman.

in my opinion I believe Conroy has had Sergachev over other dman for a while, On 960 a few months ago I felt he alluded to this then.

very interesting listen... pretty much describes how the Flames list comes together.
Super juicy stuff in there. Steinberg doesn't even know what to ask when the reveal on lists, know 4 guys will be gone at 6 so will get either 1 of 2 guys, etc happens.

Is anyone else not too pumped on Joulevi because of his attitude? I've heard a few interviews where he comes off sounding quite conceded. Maybe he's actually just being funny but I'm starting to think that's not the case. Not sure if that attitude would translate very well to Flames culture.

I find some of the foreign guys come across as conceited because their poor english hampers their sarcastic, or joking tone.
Killington sounded really conceited in all of his interviews, but I don't think he actually is.

I think if Juolevi is there at 6 he's a Flame.

Burke mentioned several times that you take the best player available & if you deem it's a tie you go with the defenceman first.

In every interview I've ever heard him give for every organization he's ever worked for he has consistently & repeatedly described building a hockey team from the defence out.

Yes we have 3 high quality dman currently signed to long term desks, but the draft is for 2 or 3 years from now, not September.

He hired Treliving, so I would believe Brad aligns with this thought process.

It's easier to trade a quality dman for a quality winger than a winger for a dman.

Yes it may be easier to project a quality winger earlier in the draft but Juolevi would be the first dman selected, which is hard to screw up (unless you're the Oilers, they'll find a way).

I am constantly amazed by mck drafts and predictions that project players based on organizational need, when few go this route. It's a drafting strategy that is a moving target. It can be done but it is higher risk in the first round because essentially it goes against the scouting & ranking process.

Button talked about guys in the 4th round and later never been projected as a top 6 guy or top pairing D... Then talked a bit about Treliving wanting a skill guy last year so they went with Mangiapane.

Interesting thing here is I'm not sure how you project Mangiapane to be anything but a top 6 given his size. He's not going to be effective as a bottom 6 being smaller but I guess the scouts disagreed!

I'm willing to bet the Flames have Brown and/or Sergachev in their top 6. I'll be surprised if they take Nylander.

Brown and Chychrun have grown on me listening to the Button interview. I have a feeling they are higher on the Flames list than on any of ours. Maybe they have it top 3, followed by Tkachuk - Brown - Chychrun. With PLD and Nylander being 7 - 8.

I think theres a good chance we take Brown or Chychrun. I wouldnt be upset tbh - even though I've been more in the Nylander/Keller camp.

other two guys have named a defenseman or two and three or so forwards.

Conroy mentioned they have lots of defensemen and adding a forward would be pretty cool

Best day of the year.
Goal is to maintain contact with every team at least once every 10 days.
Trades on the floor require a lot of legwork done prior. Once a timeout is called on the floor a pick must be made. NHL management isn't heartless like the NBA & peddle a pick 5 minutes after you drafted him.

Flames will not pick positionally.

They have offers outside the top 10 that give them value, but they're not interested.

They need to get a goalie (no surprise).

Discusses Gio's foundation award, & how great of a captain he is.
