Hmm. I was going off a Bruce Arthur tweet. Maybe he was being sarcastic...

That was the King Clancy (Which H. Sedin won)...

The real NHL awards controversy is Habs players not nominating PK for the Clancy charity award the year he gave 10M to a children's hospital
The next question is, what's the difference between the two awards?

The King Clancy goes "to the player who best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice and who has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution to his community." The NHL Foundation Award goes to the player "who applies the core values of (ice) hockey—commitment, perseverance and teamwork—to enrich the lives of people in his community."

I'm not sure why they decided they needed to introduce a second award for essentially the same thing, but they did.

In some years, the same player has won both awards (like Iggy in 2003-04), but not always.

Donating a wad of cash to a hospital isn't exactly the definition of 'community service', as great as it was. I think that's what it came down to.

Glad Gio won the award, but if you think the donation is all that Subban has contributed to Montreal's community, you're mistaken.

He spends a lot of time there as well. He's done all sorts of great things for the hospital beyond just the financial contribution.

Really awesome for Gio.

Can't help but think Subban should have won though.

Have to wonder if PK's on ice person had some influence here. At times as a player he does rub some the wrong way. Whereas I think most people can respect Giordano's on ice way. That likely is your difference. If the award was entirely for off ice stuff than Subban likely gets more votes.

Great for Gio to win though. He has put in the work to become very successful and can certainly serve as an inspiration for others.

Some great quotes by Bruke about our captain.

Quote:
“I’ve been blessed in my career — I’ve had great captains,” Burke said. “I had Mark Messier. I had Markus Naslund. I had Chris Pronger. I had Scott Niedermayer … I’ve got a Hall-of-Fame list of guys who wore the ’C’ for me, and Mark Giordano belongs right on the list in terms of his leadership skills and his play and his combativeness. It’s a joy to have him on the hockey team.

“And with this, the notion is, OK, you can be a professional athlete and you can cash that cheque every two weeks and you can do the photo-op stuff and you can lend your name to things and you can pass yourself off as a person who cares. But if you’re a person who cares, you put in the time and you write the cheques and you put in the sweat, and that’s what Gio does.

“This guy is an inspiration.”
