The Habs on NYE was a much better tradition.

Habs or Oilers, either way having a consistent opponent was great.

I much prefer the oilers due to location and potential rivalry (same division/conference). Some might have some sort of allegiance to the Habs though (transplanted fan?).

Starting the season 2-0. I like it.

Then Vancouver you say? 3-0!

Given the ridiculous numbers of games the Flames play at home around Xmas, it usually is a division opponent at NYE to cut on travel.

For the Oilers opener, Flames should have an extra 3h rest given the ceremonies likely to precede the new arena opening, with all the former Oilers likely walking up stairs one by one to re-unveil their banners, and the second tier idiots like Lowe and Huddy and Semenko unveiling the other banners.

I like it. Nothing worse than start with 3 games over the first 2 weeks. Which I think was the case in a couple of recent seasons.

World cup will be great warmup for the top guns. They'll hit the ground running, hopefully. Annihilate the Oilers in their new toiletbowl, while holding McDud pointless with hopefully a good new tender between the pipes. And the annual "this year is our year" hype up north will be quieted significantly, as per every october.

Glad we aren't opening the season at home. Also like the fact that we get to play the Oilers in their home opener in the new building. We beat them 5-0 in the last game at Rexall, I'd love it if we did the same in the same at Rogers Place.
