Fleury being a nightmare scenario makes no sense to me. He's a proven starter in the league with his only real question mark is if he can prove he can play in playoff pressure again.

My favourite part of the potential in getting his also the fact that he's coming from a franchise that has expected to win the cup every year for almost a decade now. He becomes another part of the leadership in a locker room that is likely getting younger in the next couple years.

Nightmare?
Draft McLeod, Howard in goal, injury at the WC, Smid on the team.

Trading 6th overall straight across for Andersen.
Signing one of the ufa wingers (lucic, backes, etc...) to a long term big money contract.
Johnny/Monahan injury at world cup.

Must be living the sweet life if Nylander and Fleury on your team gives you nightmares.

Draft a goalie at 6! Edmo or Van move up to 3 for a pittance.

Picking a defenseman at 6th would IMO be major failure by the organization. There's simply not a positive spin you can put on that as I don't want to hear how you can stock them and trade them as trades are due to inability to draft properly and address organizational depth.

This organization seems to go through periods of futility at positional depth whether it be at the position of goaltender, center, and now skilled wingers. Not a fan of the Nashville Predator route of constantly picking defensemen and having to trade for your skilled forwards as while they have been a constantly good team they have never been a real cup contender. Funny is a lot of the draft interviews on 960 with scouts and scouting bureaus seem to think the Flames have to take a forward due to their defensive depth but really I'm not so sure as Burke and Treliving do have a bit of an outdated attachment to pure size which is the one thing that really worries me about this regime.

No kidding. The fans of teams behind the Flames would be giddy with excitement if the Flames pass on Nylander.

There's alot more scary things than those things happening.

Just imagine Brad goes nuts and trades the whole team for every other teams 6th round pick.

Nightmare scenario for me.

Hardball with Monahan negotiations and he signs on offer sheet for $7.5M per for 5 years and the Flames match overpaying him know and having him potentially be a UFA at 26 like Stamkos. During this ugly period word gets out the Gaudreau camp is also not happy and pushes for a deal to get him as close to UFA as possible

The Flames go way off the board with the 6th pick and take Bean or McLeod.

Treliving can't dump any of the bad money, word is Smid has a huge recovery and is going to be ready for camp.

All goaltending plans fail and the team goes back to Ramo as the 1A option

Very interesting thread. As for the OP, understand that certain prospects might not be your favourite, but does the Flames selecting one that's not completely off the board give you nightmares? Also, not sure why not taking anyone in UFA would be a nightmare, who is out there you want really badly.

My offseason nightmares included the Flames overpaying for Colborne ( and I kind of like him), having match a rediculous offer for Mony and only getting a bridge for Johnny.

"New Era" version of a nightmare is a joke. I would gladly be happy if those scenarios happened for the flames. Nylander should be picked at 6th and flames could do a lot worse than Fleury in net.

This is my nightmare:

Draft at 6th: Flames GM takes size to literally and reaches for Gauthier

Flames don't trade for a goaltender and realize that Reimer has the upper hand and ends up signing in Toronto for over $5 million a season. Flames come back with Ramo/Ortio tandem.

Flames sign Okoposo to a $6 million / 6 year term

Smid does not go on LTR and sits in pressbox for season. 10 teams want Wideman but he won't waive his NMC.

Yeah was just about to write monahan offer sheet as the worst case scenario. It could destroy the team in years to come losing a mil or so of cap space and seeing him hit ufa status... 7.5 x 4 would be devastating for the flames.

Contract should be done by free agency or heads should roll, most important piece of business in 4 or 5 years, there is no reason the flames should be exposed to this risk, precendent it there in barkov and player wants to be here.

Otherwise nightmares... Oilers get Subban, and underpay. Flames trade for howard is another good one. Or Niemi. Ouch. Flames get smartest guy in the room syndrome trade down in the draft for a 4th second rounder and go off the board around the 10th pick. Jankowski gets traded to the Canucks for a poor asset that gulutzan likes.

I can think of a ton of scenarios far worse than drafting Nylander and trading for MAF.

Flames lose Monahan to Carolina on an offer sheet because Carolina's cap manger has been planning this move for years.
