The overage counts towards next season.
sites like capfriendly and generalfanager have already updated their salary charts to include the overage.
Hawks have roughly $5.365 million in capspace with 8 f, 6 d, 2g signed after the overage. To get to a 20 man roster they have to fill out the roster with 4 forwards to deals to an average of $1.43mil AAV for each forward.
And they still need to re-sign Andrew Shaw.

Thanks, I see where that's listed on capfriendly now. So not as dire as I thought - but still not much money to spread out among 4 forwards.

Yeah I didn't notice they had included the carry over already. Too bad, but they still aren't in a great spot cap wise.

Is Crawford an option for the Flames? Hawks might be able to sign Reimer at half the price

Why don't we sign Reimer for half the price?
I mean, I get it. Crawford is supposedly a much better goalie than Reimer, but the optics of that would drive me bananas.
1. We give assets to Chicago while they clear cap space at the same time
2. They sign Reimer for "half the price"
3. Reimer playing behind the Hawks probably ends up having just as good or better of a season than Crawford does playing behind the Flames

I do think the Hawks could sign Reimer for less than the Flames would have to pay. If he has a chance to start on a cup contender he would likely be more willing to take $1M less than we have to pay per season. I think Crawford is a much better goaltender as well

You really think so? I dont.
It's not going to be great for the team, but he'll likely still be more than worth it.

Its nice to see the Hawks in this situation. Handing out deals like they have been, they had to know would cost them at some point. Hossa is 37 and has 5 years left on his contract?!

Yeah holy cow. Hossas has 5 years left!? Yikes.Hawks have to lose more value. Hawks still have three or four good prospects left in the tank to replace some of what they're going lose.

I wouldnt be too hasty in tooting that horn, hes 37 right now and he still had an excellent and effective playoffs.
The Hossa deal on the surface of it looks insane, but sometimes, every now and then, one of those insane deals pays off and it just might be him.

We'll see if it pays off when he's 42 with a cap hit of 5.2.

Well the economy isnt going to be crap forever and the cap is going to go up over that period as well.
I'm not saying its all going to be sunshine and roses, but its likely not the end of the world either. Yes, at the end of that contract its going to suck to be paying a declining 42 year-old top dollar. But they got 3 cups for it. So far. Many would take that deal.

It's kind of funny reading about how much trouble the Blackhawks are in. On paper, they have the best roster in the league IMO. On the ice, three championships in the last six years.
I hope the Flames have the problem of having to pay the maximum rookie bonus. Actually I wish the Flames had all of the problems the Blackhawks have.

Like I mentioned earlier with Hossa, is his contract was massively front loaded. If he retires early the Hawks are FUBAR with cap recapture penalties.
If I'm calculating it right, if he were to retire AFTER next season the "Cap Recapture Penalty" would be $17,100,000 per season for each of the remaining years of his contract, which is 4.
So for the 2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons the Hawks would have a recapture penalty of $17,100,000 each season.
FUBAR
If he retires after 2017/18 - $12,825,000 x 3
If he retires after 2018/19 - $8,550,000 x 2
If he retires after 2019/20 - $4,275,000 x 1

The problem is if he retires before his contract expires, he has a huge recapture penalty.
He is now entering the "back-diving" portion of his contract, where he gets paid less than his cap hit. Every year he plays reduces the potential recapture penalty in the future, but if Chicago trades him, they don't gain that benefit.
Right now, he has played 7 seasons on his contract, getting paid $7.9 million per season with a cap hit of $5.275 million. He's been paid a total of $55.3M, but his cap hit has only totalled $36.925M ... So, Chicago has benefitted $18.375M on his contract. Every year he plays from here out will reduce that benefit amount (and any potential recapture penalty), but only if he plays those years for Chicago.
If he was traded this summer, Chicago's cap advantage for Hossa would be locked in at $18.375M. If he then retires with time left on the contract, Chicago's recapture penalty would be the cap advantage amount divided by the number of years remaining on the contract.
Let's say for example that Hossa plays 3 more seasons and retires with 2 years remaining on his contract...
If he plays the entire time in Chicago: He will have been paid a total of $61.3M over 10 seasons, with a total cap hit of $52.75M over that time. The cap advantage gained by Chicago in that time would be the difference of those two numbers or $8.55M. With two years remaining on his contract, Chicago would face a cap recapture penalty of $4.275M each season for those last two years.
On the other hand, if he gets traded this summer: The team trading for him will face no recapture penalty because their cap hit for his contract will be higher than what they paid him for those three seasons (actual salary = $6M; cap hit = $15.825M). Chicago's cap advantage would still be $18.375M, so they'd face a recapture penalty of $9.1875M for the last two years of his contract.
They pretty much have to keep Hossa just so they can regain some of the potential future penalty.

With the recapture penalty for hossa... Who does that leave for chicago to shed for cap space? I guess they could let Shaw go but is that enough? They have to find room for panarin when his contract is up next year too.

After this season where Hossa makes $4m he has four years left @ $1m a season. Either he accepts a trade to a floor team needing his cap hit and then retires or he gets a mysterious long term back injury.
I can't see him playing for $1 million in chump change.
