Two years doesn't make any sense to me. Now he will count as a player to protect or expose in the expansion draft, just to have one more year on his contract.
If I were Carolina, I would have pushed for 1 year, leave him off the roster for the ED, then, if you're still interested, look to re-sign him as a UFA afterwards (or, more likely, move on).

They won't have to protect him unless he has an NMC and I"m sure he won't. I think a 2 year deal is smart because he'll likely be one of the guys with a decent contract that they expose.

Agree - if they continue with the idea of having to expose 25% of your salary cap. But my understanding was that they have scrapped that.

I'm not sure I understand what your concern is about exposing him? No expansion team is choosing him.

Probably not.
But if I were GM, I would want to keep things as clean as possible.
And if I weren't worried about him being selected, shouldn't I be asking myself why I'm signing him?

Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed goaltender Cam Ward to a two-year contract extension. The deal will pay Ward $3.5 million in the 2016-17 season and $3.1 million in 2017-18.

The rumblings is to sign someone to a 2-way so they can bring up Brossoit for some games. But they expect Talbot to play the vast majority so they want Brossoit to play in the AHL not sit on the bench.

That seems like a lot of money for a replacement level goaltender. 3.3 AAV

I think this is probably becoming the going rate for a proven back-up. It's an increasingly expensive League.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Cam Ward's extension with CAR has a modified NTC.

You'd have to figure that Reimer is likely going to be in that same 3.3-3.5 range give or take.
If it was a split between Reimer and spending several assets on Fleury or similar, I'm leaning towards going the UFA route.

I think this puts Reimer at minimum 2yr/$7mill and at maximum 3yr/$12mill.

3.3 AAV for an average goalie.
Flames should really hire their cap space manager.

Ward played 103 games the past two seasons had a 2.40 and 2.41 GAA respectively.
I don't think he's amazing but the dollar amount is fine for what he's giving that team. Keep in mind they have one of, maybe even the youngest D cores in the entire NHL, too, so plenty of mistakes are made. David Marcoux, who's now goalie coach with Carolina, was praising his communication with that young D core.
I don't think Ward is great or anything, but he can move the puck and play a 1A workload. The term makes sense too, buys them time to develop Nedelkovic who was up there with McDonald and Demko as one of the top goalies of that draft class.

In his entire career, Cam Ward has never had a GAA below 2.40.
But I guess between he and Lack, Carolina's goaltending combines to make less than $6M. That's something. Carolina was really good at shot suppression this year, and their defense is only going to get better. Maybe they hope he can pull an Osgood.

I highly doubt that is the figure that Reimer is looking for or will get. Ward was signed to be the 1b goalie for this season and probably an overpaid back-up for next season. Reimer is going to be looking for starting money if Flames come calling. I can't see him signing for less than $4 million a year. I could also see it going up to $5 million per year.

Once you guys get old you'll realize that vets are valuable. I don't think this is a bad signing (for Carolina). Would be a different story if the Flames had tried to make Ward their starter.
