I'd have done it for one year of Bickell

Wouldn't have been able to re-sign Gaudreau and Monahan with Bickell.

Sure we could have.
Just would have had to roll with Ortio/Rittich as our goalie tandem.

How so? Do the Flames ONLY have 13-14 million in cap space right now?

Gaudreau and Monahan are well over 10, then two goalies and Colborne (if we sign him)

I have to imagine this is just the tip of the iceberg for Chicago.
Just $4 million in cap space left with only 15 players signed. Either the bottom half of the roster is going to be hot garbage or more players will have to move. And it won't be easy with all the NMCs they've handed out.
They've always done well for themselves when they've run into cap problems. I'm really interested to see how they handle this upcoming season.

The Flames will be lucky to get Monahan and Gaudreau under $13 million combined.
If we didn't have Wideman, this may have been possible, but this really goes to show the price the Flames would have to pay to get rid of him.

Annoys me the Flames weren't able to swing any deals like this when we had abundant cap space.

I said 13-14 for Monnie and Gaudreau for a reason. Didn't know until I weighed in on this that the Flames only had 21 million in cap to work with until they make some trades.

Expensive fix to a mistake. Bickell's cap hit wasn't like Sharpe's or Oduya's - fair value that had to moved out anyway because of the cap crunch. Bickell's cap hit was a self-inflicted wound.

What a dumb contract Bickell has though

The cost of overpaying Bickell has been high, 3 years of Cap reducing maneuvers, that have cost prospects, and finally, TT, just as he is finally growing enough to be effective.

That's on one of the best teams in the league with one of the best coaches who is notoriously hard on young players.
I hope some of our prospects plateau like that.

TT, while still physically not filled out enough to win many scrums, was defensively sound enough for Q to use on a checking line (being spotted top 6 when needed), on the PK, and on the PP as a Point man. He had Q's trust.

By some reports they did - but had the players reject the deal or the deal fall apart.
If memory serves they had Riberio+1st done with Phoenix but Ribs wouldn't come. And they had something with Carolina close to being done too (Ward?).
I think teams are now more motivated though because the cap going up isn't going to bail them out.
I think this also shows that the shine has come off a bit from Teravainen. Basically the concerns that were there that caused him to drop in the draft, are proving to be at least partially a reality. The risk is him being one of the tweener offensive players where he needs to play a top 6 role to be effective, isn't a great top 6 player, and isn't suited for any other role.
Still good deal for the Canes.

Because the two play a similar role? Where does Teravainen, another small forward, fit on this team? We're concerned about size and we'd trade away one of our only effective forwards with size for another guy the size of Shinkaruk? The only thing that makes people think about Teravainen at all is because of the draft he was from. He would have been nice to get for free, but unless the Flames could move Wideman and Bolig the deal doesn't make sense.

TT is an exceptionally slick passer in tight quarters, he has an offensive up-side, but does need a finisher on his line. On the 'Hawks, he never got much time at his "natural" position, Center.

Ah man... what a brutal trade. That's a steep price to get out from under Bickell's contract. Good on the Canes.
