Its for the cap hit, not the salary.
Marc Savard's contract landed Reilly Smith for the Panthers (although they traded Jimmy Hayes in this trade) and now a 2nd round pick for Devils.

Money today is worth more that the same value a year from now (or several years from now), when you consider buying power and interest.
At this point though, it probably wouldn't be worth it for Savard since the amount is relatively small and he only has to wait 1 more year.
But in other situations, I can see why an injured player might want to be bought out of their contract.

The cap hit will be on LTIR all season, so they can still spend that money it would only potentially hurt them during the off-season as they wouldn't be able to exceed the cap by the full 10%. Prior to the move they had about $16 million in cap space next season with only about 5 players to sign; Campbell being about the only bigger name.
So I fail to see how this is for the cap hit, seems like owners pinching pennies to me.

How could I forget a career minor leaguer that probably shouldn't have an NHL contract and the 23 year old that has shown zero offensive ability at the NHL level. The two combined aren't even worth the 5th round pick New Jersey wasted on Graham Black.

K, I want to see a current pic. Some years ago Tommy Albelin joked with me about how he thought a fat guy wearing a Marc Savard jersey was Marc Savard before busting out laughing. Savard was not renowned for his conditioning.

Anyone know how to embed a tweet? Craig Button commented on the Savard trade above, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to embed from twitter onto CP.

That might be a bit awkward... Hey Marc can I take your picture to show people just how out of shape you are these days?

You only have access to the LTIR if you can get the player on the roster on day 1 and then move him to LTIR.
They have about $20 mil in cap space but want to sign Campbell and Trochek which are going to cost money....likely half of that maybe more. That puts them currently at 20 signed players with $10 mil left. However, that roster includes 3 or 4 players (Grimaldi, Thornton, McCann, Kampfer) near the minimum or on ELC that they likely want to have further down the depth chart next year and leaves Mitchell or a Mitchell replacement unsigned.
So essentially that cap space will disappear quickly with the signings of Trocheck, Campbell and Mitchell/replacement/improvement. Could be close to $15 mil. Then you need to look at some other upgrades who will carry with them bigger contracts.
I think they want the cap room.

That's why you ask if you can take a selfie with him and "pause midway to open your camera app" when in reality it is already open. Take a burst pic. pffft. Amateur.
