I'm not sure your memory on Housley as a Flame is all that clear. That said, since when did it require a HOF worthy performance to best Brodie at this point?

Exactly. Brodie has still had the career as many players on this list, even if only looking at their time as a Flame.

I made my comment in response to:

Hard to defend voting for Brodie over Housley. Their tenure with the Flames is similar (328 games vs. 336 games). One guy is in the Hall of Fame, the other shows a lot of potential.
Housley was a Flame for 5 seasons they missed the playoffs 4 out of 5. in
He was not a top d-man in the league in any of these years.

Brodie was the Flames best D-man in the playoffs in which they won a series.

Comparing Brodie's years as a Flame to Housley's (and ignoring Housley's great years with the Sabres and Jets) and it is not even close.

Housley ahead of McCrimmon, seriously makes me question all that is hockey.

People may forget that we got Housley the second time as a waiver claim. He left here on waivers as well. Not exactly a stellar time as a Flame.

Thank god Housley was around for those years. There wasn't much to cheer for but he was amazing. I loved watching him.

Gotta be a generational thing. For those who didn't see him play:

McCrimmon was a meaner, hairier Regehr.

Still remember being so mad as a 12 year old when they traded my favorite player for him. I didn't understand the business end of things at all at the time.

MacInnis -> Housley -> Albelin + Hulse

So much fail back then

Same here. Sarge gets the edge for me though. Although Macoun played more years with us. Tough call. They both were mean and tough to play against. I miss us having a guy like that.

Just a stat reminder now that we're through some of the obvious choices.

My choice is McCrimmon. By far.

Some data to help with the debate:

Conn Smythe
MacInnis

Calder
Suter

NHL Plus Minus
McCrimmon

NHL First All Star Team Flames Awards
MacInnis x 2
Phaneuf

NHL Second All Star Team
Suter
McCrimmon
MacInnis x 3

Flames defencemen who appeared in all star games for the Flames

MacInnis x 6
Suter x 4
Reinhart
McCrimmon
Dion x 2
Giordano
Housley
Rautekellio

According to Wikipedia, no Flame blueliner ever won the Molson Cup for the season.

Ralph Scurfield Award for: the player who "best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, determination and leadership on the ice, combined with dedication to community service."

Macoun
MacInnis
Gautier
Regehr
Warrener x 2
Sarich
Giordano
Phaneuf

Bud McCaig Award: who "best exemplify Mr. McCaig’s enduring virtues of respect, courtesy and compassion for all individuals he encountered both in his professional and everyday life

Regehr
Giordano
Russell
Brodie

Flames Captains: defencemen

Boughner

Its almost criminal how under appreciated McCrimmon is in this poll but also understandable that many voting never saw him play. He was as legitimate a shut down/ tough guy defenseman as ever played the game IMO. His "stats' wont overwhelm anyone but he was as important a piece of the Flames cup winning team as anyone else.
