Form the article:
Some homeowners are paying more than 50 per cent over last year, largely because the city collects taxes on behalf of the Alberta government.
“We have to pass it on to tax payers, so the provincial portion of your property tax bill is going up 10 per cent. The municipal portion is only going up by three-and- a-half per cent,” Ward 10 councillor Andre Chabot said.

If you have a City of Calgary Assessment login, click on your Roll Number, and at the bottom of the detailed assessment there is a link to the Property or Business Revenue Neutral Calculator. This has both your previous year assessment and your previous year taxes.

Just opened our tax bill last night. I knew it was coming...but that didn't make it any more appealing to look at. About a $1000 increase over last year.

Nobody should be forced out of their home simply due to external market conditions that they are not a part of. Especially not when such an increase takes a ~30% spike in one year; once again not due to anything the person is a part of.

She could sell her house and buy one that is worth exactly half. And pay less taxes.
How is that cold?

How did she even get approved for a mortgage on having 3 jobs? I suppose, they look at total income brought in by the household. I cant fathom a $700K house and then having 3 jobs.

Cold? Forced out of her home?
You are making up a pretty convincing story for this woman based on a 1 sentence quote from an article.
Fact of the matter is that she can't afford the house she bought. Based on the increased monthly TIPP payments I could see it making it tight but anyone living well beyond their means like this lady obviously is, should make a better financial decision and sell.

Mine went up from $100 a month to $150 a month! 50% increase!
And the appraisal is lower than what I paid for the place last year...

From 2013, we are paying $3275 more per year for 2016 property tax. Compared to LY, it went up by $993.53. I blame the NDP first, then Nenshi second. Scrap the art projects (ie. hideous blue ring thingy by airport) after major construction, take better care of the roads and snow clearing, etc.
My wage went up by $1/hour during those years. I need to get a second job, maybe, working for the city or province to pay for the increased tax.

When you look at your tax bills, remember that Allison Redford went gallivanting around the world on personal trips with your money.
And she didn't go to jail for it.

This was coming down the pipe a few months ago with the NDP hike. Calgary is already talking about the 2017 hike (3.7 to 4.7%). I'd have to imagine that the NDP are going to hike things again (even higher than this go around) with their massive spending deficit.
We're going to be looking at even higher increases every year for the next few years at the very least.

If anyone is blaming the mayor for this, take a look at Council since 2001 and it's not just a Nenshi problem. This is a yearly tradition - the hiking of taxes is what we celebrate in this city like a statutory holiday.

Mine went up $30 a month, so roughly 13%. So in 6 years since owning my house, my property tax went from $1,900 to $3,000. Yay for stupidly high increases. So should I expect another ~60% increase in 6 years? Looking forward to paying ~$5,000 soon! Screw you Nenshi / Notley. You both suck.
