If your a golfer you owe it to yourself to play Maderas, Amazing course, It's not cheap but I played it twice on twilight for $80.00 and had no trouble getting the full round in.

Two words. AIRCRAFT CARRIER! Maybe it is the millwright in me but that was the single coolest thing I have ever seen. I was like a kid in his own playground for 6 hours, nothing but a huge smile on my face the whole time. Just so well done.

We stayed at the Hyatt in mission bay https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xsbad8GEW78

Cool thing about the hotel was you could take the water taxi to the aquarium. Our room also faced the aquarium, and we got to see the fireworks every night from our room.

As others have nmentioned, the aircraft carrier is very cool, it is interesting talking with the docents.

Go go the gas lamp district and get your eat on.

I also found it really easy to drive around there.

When we were at Coronado beach a jet fighter came screaming down the shore line at a relatively low altitude, it was just cool

Love, love, love San Diego! Do all the things mentioned. The Navy base was cool but you need to know someone down there for that (good friend is stationed down there).

We rented a place in Carlsbad, it was a very nice area.

San Diego is a great family location. If you want, you could check out Legoland. The Zoo, Safari, SeaWorld, and the Carrier are good locations. Even Disneyland, etc. are within reach if you're up for it.

There's pretty good shopping as well. Have a good trip!

San Diego is an awesome city with not shortage of things to (and the people who live there ar really nice, too)! My favourite vacation spot.

In addition to what other people said, we went to a national park (I think it was national) called the Cabrillo Monument. Go to the top where you can see out to the ocean forever, then go tide pooling at the water. It's on a military base so you have to go when it's open. Added bonus is tons of military stuff is constantly on the move. It was neat.

Skip Sea World, but do everything else mentioned so far. San Diego has my favorite climate in the world, I just love it. Watch out for the UV index, it gets crazy high during the summer.

This. Awesome up there with fantastic views.

The one thing I'd say about San Diego is it would probably be difficult to do without a rental car, no?

Seriously, it`s the only city where I`d say a Segway trip is worth it.

If you're looking for a great area with some awesome restaurants, the Gaslamp district in downtown SD is the place to be. The city is super easy to get around by train too; it can even take you to Tijuana!

I'd agree for sure. Would be hard to get to see a lot of these without a car.

Something different to do is to visit the bar that was used in Top Gun-
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kansas_City_Barbeque

Food was pretty decent, and huge portions. It's pretty close to the USS Midway.

Great place to find some good Mexican food. We went here in the GasLamp quarter: http://www.lapuertasd.com/

Can't recommend it enough.

We rented a house in Mission beach for a week. it is super nice, lots of restaurants, 2 beaches, a little rides place with an old rickety roller coaster and a few other things.
Take the hop on hop off trolley tour. start and end in old town. well worth it.

I have been to San Diego 3 times and it's a fantastic place to visit. Lots of solid advice in this thread. The only thing I have to add is to be aware of the wild temperature fluctuations between different parts of the SD area. It is always around 22C - 25C down by the ocean, but can shoot up to over 35C as you head further away from the water.

Assuming you are travelling from Calgary, try to get the direct flight. Going through LAX is a major pain and should be avoided if possible.
