I would absolutely love for the Flames to get a top 3 pick. However, my higher priority is that the Oilers DO NOT get a top 3 pick. I can almost live with the Canucks getting a top 3 pick, but only if it means that the Oilers don't.

Even if Boston, Carolina and Ottawa win the top 3 picks, I would be happy because Edmonton and Vancouver dropped out of that range.

That said, Flames should win #1 and pick Laine. Coyotes win #2 and pick Matthews and Blue Jackets win #3 and pick Pujajahjahajrrariviairahajarvi. (sp?).

Wherever the Oilers pick, I hope they take Keller, because he is a small forward and they need more small forwards.

If this happens the Flames should not pick Laine at #1. If they want Laine over Matthews, they should bluff wanting Matthews, trade down one spot and pick up an asset from the Yotes.

Good point. They can agree to a trade that is slightly in Calgary's favour for later on in the season too... or just trade like you suggested. Your suggestion would guarantee that the Flames get an asset, so.. Okay. I'm on board with your idea.

I think the Flames likely want to come out of the draft with Tkachuk or Dubois.
So if they don't get the 5-spot there are two primary x-factors
1. How many teams ahead of them take a D. One is likely, but two gets unlikely
2. How do the Flames feel about Nylander. If they are in the 7-hole he is likely the guy with the most upside.

That will be define the likelihood of them trying to drop down.

I think if they get 5 or 6 they will get one of their guys.

Yeah, I guess it depends on where they land but Vancouver and Edmonton have been suggested as preferring a defenceman.

Maybe one of them is willing to trade down.

Yup and if those two are both ahead of the Flames, and one of them takes a D, does the other still take a D?
I thought there was a clear #1 D in this draft a month ago, now I have no idea if a D goes in the top 5 and if so - which one.

A lot of people in Edmonton figure the Oilers will trade the pick if it isn't in the top 3.

I wonder if the Flames drop a couple spots like this (7-8 range), do they take 6'6 220lb skilled center Logan Brown?

This gets a 4 from me. Moving down two spots isn't great, but no one from the West gets in the top 2. Canucks only get 3rd, no Oilers win, no Leafs win, no Jets win. Could be a lot worse.

Isn't ARI in the west? Our division in fact. 1st and 3rd picks to our division rivals is a bad result to me.

If the Flames miss out on the top five forwards, how far would you consider trading down for a quality NHL experienced or ready goalie?

Well, I just won a new Vitamix at work for staff appreciation week, so my luck is running high. That means we win the lotto right?

So today is also my birthday, so I did my own one to test the birthday luck.

1. Carolina
2. Winnipeg
3. Montreal

So Edmonton/Toronto/Vancouver drop out, but Calgary gets bumped to 8th, so this one sucks too.

So as we wait for the ping pong balls to start bouncing, let’s set the stage with some pre-lottery power rankings. You already know how the 14 non-playoff teams are ranked in terms of their actual lottery odds, so instead let’s try a few slightly more subjective categories.
Quote:
The “Conspiracy Theories Are Fun” Ranking

Let’s be clear: The NHL does not rig the draft lottery. Even the most paranoid fan had to give up that whole concept after last year. But it’s fun to pretend that they would, and these results would be the ones that would have hockey fans reaching for their tinfoil caps.

No. 5: Calgary Flames/Ottawa Senators (tie) – Oh look, it’s another lottery win for a team looking to nail down a new arena. How interesting…

No. 4: Toronto Maple Leafs – A big market headed up by a former league employee. Plus, Lou Lamoriello does have a history of getting Gary Bettman to see things his way.

No. 3: Boston Bruins – With just a 1 per cent chance of winning, any Bruins win would raise eyebrows. Factor in Jeremy Jacobs being a loyal Bettman lieutenant, and you have ammo for a generation of lottery truthers.

No. 2: Arizona Coyotes – The long-struggling franchise is handed a once-in-a-generation marketing bonanza in the form of the best local prospect to ever come along. It’s almost too obvious, right? In fact, you were probably expecting them to be ranked No. 1. And they would have, if it weren’t for…

No. 1: Montreal Canadiens – Remember when Marc Bergevin made that weird John Scott trade, then cryptically referred to “a reason that I can’t really tell you”? Sure, in hindsight that seems to be an obvious reference to the Jarred Tinordi suspension. But if the Canadiens win one of the lottery spots, we’ll all forget about that and pretend it was Bergevin’s promised payoff for helping make Scott disappear.
Quote:
The "Unintentional Comedy Ranking

We all love a good laugh. Here are the results that would give us one.

No. 5: Ottawa Senators – Come on, what could be better than seeing the Maple Leafs write off an entire season, only to get passed in the lottery by the Senators?

No. 4: Montreal Canadiens – Oh, right.

No. 3: New Jersey Devils – Mainly just to see the look on Lamoriello’s face.

No. 2: Buffalo Sabres – Four words: Tim Murray victory speech. (No, really, Tim Murray’s victory speech would last for four words.)

No. 1: Calgary Flames – If the front page of every Canadian newspaper the next day wasn’t a photo of Brian Burke and the headline “They won a goddamn lottery” then I don’t know what to tell you.

Whoops. Yeah, of course they are. I guess I just don't care if the Coyotes get a high pick.

plus with all the rankings now having basically a top 6 or 7 F

if that's really how it settles, do teams that want a D end up 4/5 trade down to the 8-12 range which could mess things up more for the Flames if they want a top 5 Forward

so many variables, even after the lottery gets set

You guys are expecting too much! Edmonton falling to 5th is at least a 6.
