Wideman will not be moving onto a situation that is not better than he currently exists. The NMC would conclude that, so no oil move. Also, his value as many have pointed out in umpteen threads is his value.

The team will have to live with their deal unless they can move him some place better.

If Dennis wants to go, then by all means. I'd have no problem with that.

One of the most uninspired seasons from a Flames d-man..

Funnily enough, when talking about moving Wideman to the Oilers, we might actually be talking from a position of relative strength. The Oilers need defensemen that badly.

Any ideas on what the return could be?

At least 20 other NHL teams can offer better icetime to Wideman than Calgary, Edmonton certainly is one of them. Unless he wants to retire after this season he'll waive.

retain half of Widemans salary and ask for Patrick Maroon.

That stupid sign that said city of champions so we can burn it. Trade Wideman straight up.

Can someone change the title to show it is a speculation or rumor?

This is Eliott Friedman we're talking about. He's an intelligent and informed insider using insight to predict a trade possibility. If he thinks Wideman would be willing to move and a move makes sense, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt.
He's not some random speculating CP poster with a gibberish username *cough*.

However, I doubt someone like Yakupov, etc. would be the return. Probably just a pick and short-term bad contract.

It's still a rumor. He said he made it all up

It's not even a rumour, it's just an idea

This is exactly what it is.

Nope, not a rumour. But insight based on Elliott's inside information is worth much, much more than an Eklund "rumour".

They would need to send a big contract back, no?

We need a RW and a goalie. They dont really have what we need. I cant see the Oil moving Taylor Hall to Calgary.

I dont see a fit.

Flames are more likely to get what they need from another team.

I don't think a contract would need to come back. Chirelli basically did everything but come out and say explicitly that there was going to be movement from the core. I think a salary is going to be shed, and personally I would take Edmonton's 3rd rounder.

As an aside, if Taylor Hall is moved, whomever lands him will immediately see a statistically unexplainable drop in their winning percentage.

I think the idea of going to Edmonton is probably not going to happen. But I do see him being traded.

I'm guessing Wideman plays consistently for us next year in our top 6 and is move at deadline time. We don't have any prospects in waiting that are guaranteed upgrades on Wideman if he plays well, he has a NMC so he controls his own fate, and his value has never been lower.

That to me suggests Wideman will be given a shot to reclaim his roster position in camp and the early part of the season in hopes that we can "Russell" him at the end of season next year.

The Oil are unlikely to trade guys like Yak and Eberle to their biggest rivals

I hate to say it, particularly for him, but Edmonton could be a good fit for him next year. I wouldn't expect much back but it might be interesting to see. I suppose it's not impossible we end up with someone that does us more good next year and beyond than Wideman can. I like Wideman, but our need for him has passed I think. I think we have to entertain even a half-reasonable offer for him.
