What's AZ GM Don Maloney's apparent reward for stockpiling young talent & refusing to deal high picks 4 a "quick fix?" Losing his job. #dumb
HabsFanLogic @HabsFanLogic
@EJHradek_NHL As in, he got pressure to trade the pick he used to draft Strome ??

Big part of it. Some in AZ org wanted Dougie Hamilton. You don't trade the 3rd overall pick for a 2nd pair D.

The 2 Arizona fans are not happy about this. So would really like to hear the so many errors you think he's made. He's one of the better GMs out there. With a limited payroll he's had quite the success. Just a silly post.
Cox mentioning Maloney likely leading candidate to run the Vegas expansion team.
Your obsession with me is quite disturbing at this point. Give it a rest already.

He's kinda right that the timing makes no sense. Why let the guy who ran the team into the basement continue to manage the group through the rebuild... Then one year into that rebuild fire him.
Also Darcy Regier was serving as an asst. GM there for the past couple years and he left the job for "personal reasons" this season. Something odd going on there.

edit: well there has been back and forth as to who the majority owner of the Coyotes is this past summer. Wouldn't be surprised if one of the owners has finally made his play

I know the new(ish) owner Anthony LeBlanc was definitely more hands on then the rest of them were. Large presence on social media, inviting fans into his private suite to watch the game, going out to the tailgates and talking with people, town halls to update the community on what's happening with the arena and teams, going to away games. He seemed genuinely interested in finding out what's wrong with the franchise and how to take steps in the right direction.
I believe his background is in Sales and Marketing, so probably a good guy to have on board to try to take the Coyotes from being the NHL's team (which Maloney/Tippett were part of) and giving them an identity away from it.
I don't see why he should get credit for the youth movement and stockpiling of high picks, without also taking the blame for leading the team to that point. Building a big prospect pool is the easy part of the rebuild. Trade the good players like Vermette and Yandle and make the obvious picks in the draft. Still stuck with Mike Smith until 2019 with an NTC though, LOL!

Pretty surprising if true... From a player development point of view, they are widely considered to have one of the best prospect bases in the league
well maybe one day fans will take note that the goal isnt to collect as many prospects as possible but to actually win games?
still not sure what the obsession is with young young young. its not a like any team can win by dressing more than 2 or 3 ELC level players yet some fans act like unless you have 10 Blue Chippers you arent really trying.
Sure they had a run but they have had some pretty nice pieces to work with and have some success
Can we take the term "nice piece or pieces" out of hockey talk. It is so Steinberg-esque. I cringe every time I hear it. My definition of a nice piece is totally different.

So yeah he has experience in sales ? although if it was me I'd be getting rid of Tippet. I think the reason he was run out of Dallas is the new owners needed to rebuild their fan base and didn't want his boring brand of hockey.

Of everything I said, that's what you pick out to comment on... Yeesh..
Regardless of what you think, the majority of the hockey world refers to an asset as a piece or pieces. So.. I guess you're just going to have to deal with being miserable..
Back on topic, glad Tippet doesn't appear to be on the chopping block. If Arz can add a few more key PIECES they may make it back to the dance.
I can see how ownership is willing or pushing for Mathews while sacrificing a few of those PIECES.
If Toronto maintains control of the #1 overall, would Domi have to be in the fold for that trade? I mean, he's a key PIECE for Arz going forward.
So let's say you have Mathews in playing with Duclair, not only do you sacrifice a young stud like Domi, but you're also giving away another key PIECE in the pick that you could use to pickup another potential franchise PIECE.

I am actually surprised by this move. I figured that Maloney was one of the safer GM's from all the teams outside the playoffs - Treliving and Chiarelli (the latter mostly due to being new).
I thought he continually kept that franchise competitive through so much turmoil and a lower cap, and was drafting well. Arizona to me looks like a team that is well on its' way up next season. Really surprised there.
Would love to add him as an AGM to Calgary - but doubtful there is room in Calgary, or willingness on Maloney's part. He won't take long to find a job I bet.
