didn't those teams have vets leadership in the dressing room as well to support and groom the captain that Edmonton is lacking? also -those teams hadn't run rampant without boundaries for their young talent for the previous number of years.
Or am I mistaken?

There have been other young-ish superstars that have become captains early in their NHL careers. What separates those is probably the fact that they had good vets playing alongside of them to help them as captains.
Oilers have that in spades, so no worries. I can't see this being a bad move at all.. right?

There's a couple of things that I think have lead to this decision.
Hall's game went right over the edge when McDavid came back, he was terrible and lazy. I tend to think that there is something that the Management of that team doesn't like about what Hall did this year and maybe previous for them to not name him captain.
I wonder if Hall will see this as a slap in the face. He's been the golden boy and the organization has covered his warts and the fans ignore them, now suddenly you name the next great one as Captain.
For Colorado it was easy to name a 19 year old captain, he was surrounded by a lot of veterans that could mentor him.
With McDavid, my sense is this is partly a Ferrence is done, we don't have any leadership in the room, and Hall isn't what we thought he was leadership and example wise. And part of it is that they're trying to model this poor kid as Gretzky and that team is going to be under enormous pressure next year in a new building and with the expectation that they're going to compete for a playoff spot.
To me if I was McDavid or his agent I would quietly phone Chia and say under no circumstances to I want to be Captain. I want to be a player first.

Will he be young enough to break Landeskog's record of youngest captain? I'm sure the oilfans are already declaring he'll break Toews' record of youngest captain to win a cup

caught between a rock and hard place...
I am not sure what McDavid has shown to be named captain... but can he turn it down without appearing "weak"...
Oilers would be wise to tread wisely here... wtf who am i kidding? Looking forward to seeing McDavid crumple under the weight of being both the scoring savior and also the leader/captain.

Someone with video skills needs to put together a montage of McJesus interviews with The Sounds of Silence playing over the top. That'd be too perfect!

Pittsburgh did have Mark Recchi and Sergei Gonchar. But those two were also part of the country club disaster from the previous year. What made Pittsburgh good in Crosby's second year was adding Malkin and Jordan Staal. Gary Roberts and Bill Guerin came in later.
In Chicago they had washed up Martin Lapointe and Robert Lang. I guess Au coin ss well granted he was injured aND disgruntled. It wasn't till after Toews and Kane's first season that anyone would go there.

Crosby played with Pittsburgh for two years before being named captain.
in addition to the Calder, he won the Art Ross, the Pearson and the Hart trophy a couple of months after being named, not to mention leading them to the playoffs after a long drought
Whatever someone thinks about McDavid, his resume is pretty thin at this stage of his career to be named captain, even of a listing ship HMS Oiler...

I disagree. They need to get Hall and RNH off that team and turn it over to McDavid. I suspect Chiarelli had an idea what the problems were. Hence why they had no Captain this year. Now he knows. Clear the deck and let McDavid have the team. Otherwise you'll just turn him into another Hall/RNH underachiever.

Even Crosby turned down the captaincy when it was first offered to him in Pittsburgh...
"I just thought it wasn't right for me. As a team, we were playing great and you don't want to disrupt things like that. Individually, I was not ready to accept that responsibility quite yet. Going through the playoffs and having that experience has probably given me more confidence. I understand there is going to be a lot more responsibility on my shoulders with this, but it's something I'm ready for, I feel very comfortable with it and I'm just excited to get things going."

Crosby was named Captain for the 06-07 season. I think it was offered to him when Lemieux retired early in his rookie year.

When Crosby was named he was still 19 but he was 20 before the season started, I think Lecavalier was 19 when he took over as well. But yeah it is crazy to give it to a kid after only 45 games played.
If Hall isn't traded I can see his nose out of joint.
