So St. Louis has a chance to beat Chicago, and Dallas can beat St. Louis, but Dallas has a 0% chance of beating Chicago?

Didn't the stars actually do quite well against Chicago this year? I understand that playoffs are a different animal, but I think the Stars could certainly beat the Hawks.

They went 4-1 against Chicago this year.

Yes.

Until someone beats the Blackhawks (and by extension, the Kings) in the playoffs, they have to be considered the favorites. While it's obviously not a 0% chance Dallas loses to Chicago, I don't see a team with that back and and goaltending knocking off to 3x and defending champs.

Anaheim should have won that conference final - if they played a team that hadn't won twice already, they would have. Chicago doesn't rattle.

If St Louis beats Chicago (which I don't expect), it's moot. But St Louis rattles. I don't watch St Louis and see a team that expects to win. Which means Dallas can beat them.

I know there's nothing scientific about that. But I think you get what I mean.

Cheering for Dallas in the first two rounds, only hoping for them to get swept in the WCF.

Hope Dallas can help the Flames but I highly doubt it. Unless the Dallas goalies play uncharacteristically well, either Chicago's snipers or St. Louis' will finish them off. Dallas has REALLY bad goaltending in Niemi and Lehtonen...

League position becomes irrelevant come the play offs.

Last season, the Stanley Cup finals were between the teams that finished 5th and 7th. 13-14, 10th and 12th. 12-13, 1st and 5th. 11-12, 9th v 13th.

As for the conference finals, in the West, the teams in 3rd, 8th, 1st, 5th, 5th, 6th, 1st and 4th in the conference have made it that far. 2 1st seeds out of the last 4 have made it.

I just think that things are totally different come play off time. You get nervous and edgy, your flaws get exposed and the truly solid teams rise to the top. I don't think Dallas is a solid team, or a well built team. I don't think their high scoring, high conceding approach will fare too well come the 2nd round when they face either a St Louis team on a high from beating the Hawks, or a Hawks team with momentum and experience on their side.

I'm rooting for Dallas all the way, but I'm expecting a 2nd round pick from them come June.

It's a no brianer, go Dallas to the third round. After that they can get swept for all I care, unless they are up against the cheating Kings.

I don't like their chances though to be honest. Not a very good team defensively. Will be interesting to see if they can score their way out of trouble in the playoffs too.

I think St Louis is going to beat Chicago. Leading to a 7 game series with Dallas.

he's played 4 out of 5 (he sat out game 3 with the flu). 2 assists so far with a +3 (highest among defensemen) and he's playing 18 min/game (4th among defensemen). Pretty interesting though that every single defenseman, except for Goligoski, is blocking more shots per game than Russell.

and he' 6th on the team in Corsi at almost 60%, 4th on the team Corsi relative

suggests the role in Calgary wasn't in his wheel house?

Nah. Small sample size.

that and playoffs are different because you play the same team over and over. If it's Minnesota and you are dominating (especially getting down and coming back) every one gets great Corsi grades.

Small sample for sure, but the relative does stand out.

He did get off to a good start in the regular season in Dallas and then faded a bit.

Good for him then. If he didn't fit in our system, we got good value for him and he got a chance to earn more pay!

18 minutes per game instead of 22+ minutes per game.

I am sure Dallas' team Corsi is significantly better than the Flames but certainly interesting he is higher, in a small sample size.

Jim Nill is nobody's fool and there is a reason he gave up so much for Russell. Say what you want about Hartley but the guy is an NHL coach and he played Russell a lot on our star studded blueline. Its actually possible the guy is pretty good.
